Best known for the many short films he made in collaboration with the Educational Film Studio in Lodz in the '70s and 80s, Polish director and screenwriter Andrzej Baranski is noted for his creativity. Prior to entering the film industry, Baranski had studied to become a sanitary engineer at the Silesian Polytechnic Institute in Gliwice in the late '50s, but he dropped out and joined the Steppe student theater group to work a set designer. Between 1969 and 1973, Baranski studied film direction at Lodz Film School. After graduating, Baranski assisted director Kazimieriz Kutz on Linia/The Line (1974) and then spent time working in television before making his solo feature-film debut in 1979 with Wolne Chwile/Leisure Time. In 1984, Baranski won the Polish Critic's Award for Outstanding Film with Niech Cie Odleci Mara/Let the Nightmare Fly.
