British independent film producer Daniel Angel will probably be best remembered for his work on the 1956 film, Reach for the Sky, which was named the Best British Film of the Year. Angel, prior to working in film, served in the British Armed Forces as a border guard between Burma and India. While there, he contracted polio, which left him a paraplegic. For a time, he was able to walk on crutches until the disease forced him to be wheelchair-bound late in his life. In the 1950s, he became a prolific producer, making both full-length and short films. In 1960, Angel began selling his films to television stations, becoming one of the first producers to do so. His actions enraged theater owners and for a few years his name was removed from the credits of his films that were screened in those theaters. Shortly after his confinement to his wheelchair in 1970, Angel retired from filmmaking and he died in late 1999, at the age of 88. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi
