Is it at all possible to just judge the film on its own without giving a shit about the filmmaker's warped personal life? Woody Allen's personal life is completely irrelevant to his films. I'm not a big fan of Mel Gibson or Roman Polanski's actions as people, but I'll still watch their films and judge them on their own merits. Same goes for Allen.

Every time Leon criticizes a movie he always mentions how it's too long, you can can't stand a movie that goes over 1h:30mins can you lol

Why, did it happen to you? Is that why you're so butthurt over this? Two consenting adults are able to make their own decisions without your imposed morality. If people fall in love, they fall in love. Who are you to say they can't. Fuck off.

When your girlfriend/boyfriend has an affair with one of your kids, come back and tell me your o.k. with it.

If you think that they did was wrong.....guess what? You don't ever have to fucking do it! *GASP*.

It's not because he makes "great films". It's because he was a grown ass man. She was an ADULT woman. They were both old enough to make their own fucking life decisions. Heaven fucking forbid people would fall in love with a person they happen not to be with at that given time. Why just blame him? Why not her as well?

Once again, he commited adultery with his girlfriend's daughter. That is the true definition of a scumbag. But it's o.k. because he makes "great" films? That's pretty warped in my mind. Thanks Leon for taking the time to challenge my opinion though and making sure I shouldn't defend mine when someone tells me to go fuck myself.

Listening to this review, I couldn't help feeling like you guys were kinda forgiving towards this film because it was made by Woody Allen. I got the impression that this, with any other director's name on it, would've been given a "Some Ole Bulls**t".

Maybe this film couldve worked if it had been like Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Sex and had each vignette appear one after the other instead of intercutting with one another.

Yeah, I thought this looked like a misfire... I loved Midnight in Paris enough for it to be my favorite film of 2011, but I saw the trailer for To Rome with Love and was disappointed.  The mixed-to-negative response on Rotten Tomatoes, combined with this review, has finally knocked me off the fence.  I'm definitely not seeing this.

Before the comments got distracted.... to say the least I'll probably just wait till this out on DVD. I like Allen but with his lesser work I'd rather allow myself to be distracted so I can escape the lesser parts

It's funny how art is so subjective; I finally watched Midnight In Paris two days ago and merely found interesting elements in it.  If I see it again, it will be for the atmosphere and the setting only.  The biggest liability to me was the lead character, which is usually my problem with most of Allen's movies.  This might be because of his directorial practice of having actors (especially himself) paraphrase the lines so they sound more "natural".  What results is a lot of "uh's", "tsks", "ahs", "ums" and "I means" killing the comedic or dramatic pacing of the dialog.  Unfortunately when Allen coupled that with Owen Wilson's whiny, droning voice, it took alot to not watch the movie reading subtitles while listening to the French audio track.  I realize this has less to do with this current movie but after hearing his previous movie described as a masterpiece in the course of this review, but I was curious if the aforementioned explanation for my different reaction was shared by anyone else.

@ Paul T-"Let he who is without sin cast the first st---" Oh, why bother? Those words are wasted on you. Seriously, is there so little going on in your life that you still can't get unstuck on 'what he did IN THE PAST', to the point of ignoring the fact that he's been happily married to the woman for over a decade?

Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to distract you from your job of judging the world. Please, go back to calling everybody "idiots", with my compliments.

@Paul If two people want to have a relationship, where is the problem with it?

"you obviously have no morals" ...Why? Because I defend two consenting adults right to make their own relationship choices? ....And by who's moral standards, yours?

  • July 06, 2012 at 7:59 PM, Derek Few said ...

All I was doing was pointing out that they were both adults. And that she was not Allen's daughter. Those points stand. You seem not to be able to accept this.

By the way. your profile photo makes you look like someone Chris Hansen would try to bag on his "To Catch A Predator" show.

  • July 06, 2012 at 7:07 PM, Paul Tougas said ...

Derek, you're nothing but a Woody Allen apologist. It's pathetic that you choose to defend such a piece of shit but you obviously have no morals. That's your problem. The fact he pulled such devious shit in the past is the reason I have no respect for the guy. He fucked is girlfriend's daughter, whether blood related or not, it's WRONG. So fuck you and your ignorance. Everyone reading this back and forth realizes you're an idiot.

  • July 06, 2012 at 6:43 PM, Derek Few said ...

"Then why was it national news when the whole relationship was revealed"..... Why is this relevant?

  • July 06, 2012 at 6:41 PM, Derek Few said ...

He was NOT a pedo, because she was over 18. She was NOT his daughter because he never adopted her. It doesn't matter how "controversial" it was. Or that he cheated on his partner (not wife). You were wrong on both your points.
