I saw this movie 2 weeks ago and am still thinking about it.  Loved it. Although Hushpuppy has strong will, it is housed in 6yr old body.  The world is so big and there are so many perils.  I fear for her.  Wonderful movie.

Just saw this movie and HOLY SHIT K COOLMAN!!! It finally came to Wilmington,NC and it is probably one of the best experiences I've had watching a movie. I like how different, ambiguous, poetic and real this movie was. The film functions as a love letter to the people of the Katrina disaster  who threw up a middle finger to the table scrap the government handed to them. I'm glad that I can finally enjoy this review without worrying about any spoilers.

I loved the movie, probably my favorite drama of the year so far. The director also did a short which was really similar in tone called Glory of the Sea I believe and is on Youtube. Definitely worth a check out

I don't understand the plot of this film, in the sense that, are the Aurochs supposed to be monsters? They are just ancestors of domestic cattle that died out in the early 1600s...are they making a film where the dangerous creatures are cows...?

  • July 16, 2012 at 2:36 AM, said ...

Aurochs are essentially the ancestors of modern cattle. They made there last stand in the forests of northern Eorupe and died out in the 1600's. Though there was a nazi breeding program that tried to resurrect the aurochs.

After I listened to the review, I went right out to see it. I definitely agree the movie stays with you, but I'm not actually sure what all the metaphors meant. It kinda flew over my head. I would only recommend this to adventurous movie goers or people who want something entirely independent. Great movie on a budget.

The father, played by Dwight Henry, owns and runs a great donut shop in New Orleans.  He still works there and is the real deal. Amazing to see him pull of a performance like that.

I somewhat agree with Declan, though not as militant about it.

You should describe the plot of the movie a little earlier in the review for movies less known like this, otherwise most of us are just lost for the first 5 minutes of the review. But its a small flaw compared to how much good you guys do with the rest of the site.

I hope this gets a theatrical release in Ireland, apparently it's set to release in the U.K. in October. :) Great review!

THANK YOU CYRUS FOR ASKING WHAT THE MOVIE WAS ABOUT!!!! what the fuck guys. you know just praising a movie for 5 minutes on how original and amazing it is can get kind of annoying. ESPECIALLY for a small kind of indie movie that not many people know about.

But after all that it sounds like a good movie. hahahaha
