My Review of Rise of the Guardians

It's a shame that this movie wasn't successful in the box office.

I'd suggest to Leon, or anyone that enjoyed the film though to go read the books. They are books solely for children and aren't "young adult" like harry potter/lord of the rings, but there is a lot of Joyce's imagination in there. Characters like Pitch have an expansive/different backstory than the film, but there's still that sense of wonder, belief, and creativity in these books that can be found in these films. And the books actually get much more violent than this film did as well.

P.S. Really enjoy this review. One of my personal favorites.

Absolutely beautiful... But I really think the plot could be a bit more smoother, and the characters more develped. Overall, not one of the best Dreamworks movie, but a low full price.

Cyrus' bit cracked me the fuck up, ready to review the shit out of this movie!

This is like a high rental to me. Clever idea for the movie but they don't do much with it. Aside from Jack Frost and Pitch the other characters are very thin.

@Fungus Monkey.  I believe that bad rep was only because Pixar made a series of seriously amazing films from 02 to 06.  And because of that people somehow linked that to Dreamworks not making good movies.???  Doesn't make any sense.  Some of their best movies were some of the first they made.  Prince of Egypt, Road to el dorado, Shrek. Antz.  They were great

We did a review and bake a pie... ok it's mostly the pie.

@Sumildon - Don't tell me, tell everyone else. Regardless of my personal opinion, that's still the general outlook on their work. Like I said, I think they're getting better at storytelling but that bad rep still follows them around.

I tried several times now to type out how I felt about this film, so I'll keep it short:

I loved it. High full price for me. It was a simple, well-paced story with some absolutely stunning imagery and design. The voice actors were great, and the twists to these classic characters were actually pretty creative; most of my laughs came from the twists, such as the yetis making the toys instead of the elves for Santa.

Korey, Captain Matinee! Lol, just kidding. Had no interest in this film a first, but listening to all the good reviews, what the hell, I should check this out.

@fungus monkey.  Can we get over the snobbish, Dreamworks was never really good mentality?  They have always released quality movies with great stories.  Much more then not so. This isn't a new thing.

@ Everyone who commented on me: I do feel the marketing wasn't as strong but as for competition, the only big competition for kids was the aging wreck it ralph. Life of PI was aimed for older audiences despite the PG rating. Maybe it was that the title felt to similar to Legend of the Guardians which was another animated film that tanked. Maybe it was a little too dark. Still I loved it and I was disappointed at the performance.

@Christopher  Look at what else is out right now: the last Twilight film and a brand new James Bond film. It's not that surprising to see that this movie didn't do as well when you have stiff competition. That, and mixed with little advertising, it makes sense why this film didn't open well.

Jesus man. Listening through some of these audio reviews. Fuckin' woosah Korey, woosah. For someone who does what he loves on a weekly basis you're such a sour, angry person.

Might also be because this is the last movie between Dreamworks and Paramount, just let it do poorly. Fox will be distributing them next.

Wednesday release before Thanksgiving is a great time to release an animation, especially a Christmas one.

@Christopher - Poor marketing, weird timing, uneven advertising, little to no web presence or buzz... take your pick. If anything "Dreamworks" still has a bit of a bad reputation, even though it seems like they're getting stronger as storytellers.

Someone tell me why this bombed at the box office this weekend despite the branding of dreamworks.

I will give Korey this: He is right about the Easter Bunny -- he is the weakest of the main characters. But that's not necessarily saying he's a bad character -- it's more a compliment to the other three to say that. Either the animators felt he was trippy enough just being a 6 ft. tall bunny, or they deliberately employed him as a contrast to all the wild imagination they injected into the other characters.

That said, I had no problems with Jack Frost OR Pitch.

Jack Frost, think about it, has been all alone for centuries and doesn't have a clue how or why. His personality fit that, I thought.

I also didn't think Pitch appearing one-dimensional was a problem either because. . . Well, because I interpreted it as exactly that: Him APPEARING one-dimensional. Straight from the beginning, I thought of his demeanor and agenda as a facade -- like he was PLAYING this one-dimensional villain as overcompensation. And I don't think I was too far off in that either. Ultimately, Pitch's motivation for spreading fear was his own fear. For a children's Christmas film, I thought that was really deep.

And I hated the elves. Considering everything else they did with these characters, I was expecting Santa's helpers to be J.R.R. Tolkein-style elves -- that there'd be one scene where Legolas tells Santa his new toy is ready -- cut to Santa wielding a double-barreled minigun. So I thought the elves, if they weren't just something they threw in to include in their advertising, were a waste of potential. They weren't funny, they weren't cute, they weren't creative, and they weren't important to the plot. They were just. . . There.

I agree though, this is now my. . . Well. . . Okay, SECOND favorite Christmas movie. . .

But Tokyo Godfathers isn't something I can watch with the kids. So this is now my OFFICIAL favorite Christmas movie.

Leon, I agree with you so much. The kid in me came out. I fell in love with this movie. Visually amazing, I couldn't stop smiling watching this it really made me happy. As for needing a origin story, really you need a origin story for Santa? I don't think it needed it. I think you you have kids that still believe in Santa and the Tooth fairy take them to see this. I remember believing in every single character and how I really believe the world was full of wonder and magic when I was a kid. I believed in the Easter Bunny, how excited I was for Easter.  Full Price for me, probably even Better than Sex for me. But, I'm bias I am still a kid at heart and I make monsters for a living and I make teeth. They nailed in the Tooth Fairy for me too. Smiling like a little Geeky kid the whole time.
