    My Review of Jack Reacher

  • December 28, 2012 at 10:37 PM, said ...

Tom Cruise has to be the most successful really mediocre actor in Hollywood. That being said, Jack Reacher isn’t as much of a reach as the uninspired trailer might suggest. Actually, its pretty badass for what it is, a throw-back action/thriller serving up well-crafted violence, deft performances and enough suspense despite its flaws to hold your interest throughout. Its also less cheesy and more gritty than most PG-13 Tom Cruise flicks. Based on a character created by author, Jim Grant, Cruise continues to restore his tarnished image as the title protagonist, Jack Reacher, a highly-skilled former U.S. Army Military Police Major turned drifter with a wildly respected reputation. Watching the effectively unsettling opening sequence, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the senseless mass shooting deaths inside a theater in Aurora, Colorado or even the Kensington Sniper case in D.C. The film begins by placing the audience in an unknown assassin’s POV as he lines up would-be victims in his crosshairs. Audible breathing follows while he picks off citizens going about their day seemingly at random. The scene crackles withtension and dread because its unclear at first which of the intended targets is about to meet their maker. Six shots fired. Five victims dead. Smashcut to evidence being planted, a suspect who happens to be a trained military sniper promptly apprehended and case closed, right? Wrong. The suspect makes it clear to authorities he’ll only cooperate if Reacher is called in to investigate the crime knowing he’ll go wherever the facts lead him no matter the cost. It becomes clear these two men share an interesting past together which causes Cruise to dig deeper into what looks to be a conspiracy rising. The dialogue is quick and witty thanks to, in no small part, The Usual Suspectswriter, Chris McQuarrie, who double-dips here as the director. Crisp and strategically-placed action is sprinkled in to grab the ADD crowd because there is some lengthy but necessary exposition involved which could yield some yawns. Strong performances by the supporting cast include Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo, (who could be the next Sidney Poitier). Although, Jai Courtney is mostly wasted here as the main villain’s top henchman. There are some minor plot-holes and questions about characters’ motivations and the 3rd act suffers as a result but it shouldn’t take you out of the movie. While not an instant classic it does provide enough substance to entertain and justify the 2hr 10min running time.

    Verdict - Matinee (ADD Approved)

I dunno Julian Teamor, Cruise is pretty good in Born on the 4th of July. He's got some good performances under his belt.

Saw this yesterday and I agree that it is a full price movie, but the "super secret cameo" they were talking about went right over my head.  Who were they talking about?

Actually Cyrus, Bryan Singer directed "The Usual Suspects", Christopher McQuarrie only wrote the script.

The movie was cool and all but I just kept on staring and Rosamund Pike's chest when she was on screen, did they do that on purpose? I swear they were

Of course he's not smiling in this movie...During production he lost Katie Holmes....I can imagine him not being very happy, anyway.

I saw it tonight based on Spills recommendation .

Thank you spill I would have skipped it based on the trailers it didn't look like there was going to be any story here just Tom Cruise running around being a make believe bad ass.

there was an actual story here that was fun to watch unravel.

The opening scene was chilling .

I feel the director took it seriously and made it extremely emotional adding weight to it and making it truly chilling and ungloirfiying .

Only complaint is after that some of the other scenes involving killing started taking on a less dramatic accent I wish they could have kept up that sense of drama throughout the entire film but overall the story was very good.

Thanks Spill crew for your review

Cruise has to be THE most successful really mediocre actor ever. That being said, I've pretty much seen all the man's films in spite of myself...

Haven't seen the film, and definitely don't agree with his Scientology madness, but Tom Cruise has always been a very solid (if not great) actor. He puts in good work. Like Mel Gibson - the man's personal life is insane, but in regards to film he knows his shit.

how often does tony break the co-host character. I'm amazed it's not more often. I mean I hear him say stuff like "drop out of his mother's vagina" sometimes and it's just shocking because he's just so committed to the bit all the time.

I laughed so much at the bit about Cruise learning not to smile, LOL.

I had no idea that this was based on a novel. I thought at first this movie was going to be Tom Cruise's "One Shot" to get an Oscar. But, now that I have seen the trailer and listened to The Spill review it seems like this movie is Tom Cruise saying "Fuck the Oscars!"

The next one they need to adapt into a film script is 61 hours, It has bus crashes and drug dealers, biker gangs and it's all done in a major blizzard in South Dakota awsome!
