I was initially disappointed with the film to some extent, but having had time to think of it and rewatched scenes from the movie, I actually disagree with quite a few points. Some of them like Kerry Washington being a plot device and Tarantino's terrible acting are totally valid. However, I think you overlook a lot of the good qualities of the film as a result. It is shot incredibly well, great set and costume design, terrific sound throughout and the effects are pretty top notch for the action scenes. The acting is also terrific across the board (except for Tarantino), with everyone giving a whole ton of bravado and professionalism to their performances. The directing and writing is supposed to be a mishmash of tones and references, since that is how Tarantino has always directed his movies since Reservoir Dogs. So I am not that repelled seeing him do the thing that he is most famous for and still really good at doing.

If anything, the primary problems are still the lack of editing flow and plot structure. There are a lot of great scenes in this film and great moments of writing. The problem is the way they are cut together, sometimes awkwardly sandwiching scenes next to each other that don't mix well. It also had little scenes that could have been trimmed out throughout the story that didn't contribute anything.

As for the way you pin the blame of saying people are giving this a pass for having Tarantino's name, I think that is a rather shallow opinion. People are smarter than that (as much as they try to prove contrary) and I think a lot more critics are being fairer in their assumptions than you give credit for. If you read the full reviews of critics from across the nation, the love is not unanimously fervent even with all of the positive reviews (a lot of them rank in the B or three out of four star grades for their respective systems). Just saying people like this blindly as Tarantino fanboys is a rather pretentious thing to do.

i disagree hold heartedly with almost everything you guys said. i think the movie was great. definitely a one time kind of thing but neithertheless a great film. they do go over the top with the usage of the n word and the violence but if you look past that: great dialogue, acting, and witty banter.

movie finally came out in the philippines! like @Boikanyo I don't normally disagree with y'all either but I totally enjoyed this fun, over-the-top revenge flick. Haha at least it didn't say "based on a true story" anywhere (as far as I know)

Hey spill guys, I'm horrified about you being horrified about this movie. I'm sure runaway slaves did get torn apart by dogs, and some bored slave owner probably did have slaves fight each other. So if you can't handle real life, maybe stick to whatever torture porn you like.

I don't normally disagree with you guys but this movie rocked!

Hahaha I bet you guys don't like Huckleberry Finn because of the word "nigger". You know; the greatest American novel ever written.

    Anyway, better than sex movie.

@PokemonBlue Can't expect maturity from someone that makes such a childish and disturbingly sexist comment...

Leon commenting on Piper Perabo nude scene in Looper:  "It would have been awesome if she had any tits."

Saw this in my local town's cinema, in England btw, and myself, my sister, and the audience included had a great time laughing at the jokes, such as the sorta KKK scene, as well as Samuel L Jackson's over the top Uncle Tom character, and to top it all off the violence and action was awesome as always! It's a shame the four of you didn't enjoy it, but oh well, we did, I suppose there's irony in the fact that, in a European cinema, we could all have fun and laugh at a film ultimately about an ex-slave getting revenge on the slave owners, but the Americans, two of them black, couldn't.

    Wow, you fuckers are sensitive.

Fun movie. Great performances all around. As others have said, you guys use racist humor all of the time for entertainment, and to make fun of people at that.

Entertaining review although I don't agree with most of it.

Wow, I completely agree with Leon. The editing was... uau...

  • January 26, 2013 at 11:04 AM, said ...

what a bunch of self righteous hypocrites; you're pretty generous with racist and sexist jokes yourselves either, and in almost every episode at that. leon & korey's whining is tiresome, as is co-host's and cyrus' sucking up to them. the film's portrayal of racism and violence is over the top, but that's tarantino's signature, so deal with. not that it's a crusade against black folk, for fuck's sake.

Too bad Leon dislikes Quentin Tarantino.  Sounds like he has a personal vendetta against Tarantino.  I did not find the use of the "N" word offensive but to each their own.  The spill crew can use racial and homosexual words in an entertaining way but when Tarantino uses it for entertainment it's wrong?  Double standard fellas. I thought the movie was good but not great. Hopefully better reviews to come.  I use the word "review" very lightly.

Yeah, I got agree with a lot of the guys here: this was a entertaining review, but I disagree with a lot of it.

Script: All of the lead characters had great lines.  The lesser characters were ignorant, pompous jerks, so of course nothing genius was written for them. That's how they were back then.  I've heard you guys say on podcasts that noone said that word that much, but I disagree.  It seemed fairly natural to me.

Unbalanced story:  The beginning of the movie compared to the second half was different for sure.  I really enjoyed the buddy-relationship with the two leads.  However, I never thought it was a bad thing; it was just part of Django's story.  The new characters and tense scenes made it worth it.  I feel like the film didn't have to focus on the buddy-relationship or action.  It's a story about Django saving his wife - those other things are just parts of them. Who's to tell him he needs more of this or that?  Everything was engaging.

What I do agree with the Crew on:
    + Great performances all around
+ A couple of songs took me out of the film: The Rick Ross and John Legend song.  Everything else fit for me because they were relative to the genre.
+The ending with the horse tricks and stuff. It was absolutely ridiculous.

    Anyway, Full Price

I think you guys are really wrong on this movie.  Yes there is an excess of 20 minutes in the film, yes the hip hop song was a questionable choice within the film, but I believe as someone who became disillusioned with Tarantino that this is a good film regardless!  It has a tight narrative quality that we HAVE NOT seen since Resevoir Dogs.  That is my opinion.  That said, I think his usage of "Nigger" was fair.  This film shouldn't be controversial.  The film probes themes tastefully and doesn't fool around.  I feel that Samuel Jackson's character is a little clumsy, but not at all horrible!  Also I think the comedic scene involving the proto-KKK was tonally off!  If you can accept the gratuitous romanic ending, and the over drawn third act which throws multiple curve balls then this movie ain't that bad at all!

@Anthony Stokes i am not missing the point. No matter if it is a film based solely on comedy which it wasn't. it definitely had a comedy spin to it but it also had drama, thriller, and other elements to the film. I don't see this as a comedy yes it is meant to be a Comedy, Western, exploitation film, but if we are going to accurately depict the period they are portraying we can't act like people in this time period did not throw around the N word, regardless if it might of been excessive people have to deal with the time piece and setting this movie takes place in you are missing that point.

Whether Tarantino has used it in his former movies in honestly is irrelevant to me, and already voiced my uncomfortable opinion  with the exact usage of it in "Pulp Fiction" I also feel WAY more offended by your black face avatar than I do about the film.

In all seriousness they did take this film seriously about the depiction of slavery, and added sense of humor and a broad array of genre elements incorporated into the film. This is an excellent movie I would give it a "Full Price"

To be honest this how I feel As a young Black man that enjoys the moviegoing experience on a weekly basis, it somewhat bothers me how Blacks rarely ever get leading roles in big-name films by big-name directors unless their name is Will Smith. It was good to see a movie where Black people come out on top in a movie from a big-name director. The ONLY director that puts Black people in his movies AND keeps them alive is Michael Bay, and he sucks as a director. Quentin Tarantino has always been one of my favorite directors and I respect his boldness to tell a tale that puts Black people in the forefront while not compromising his artistic vision for no one. We need more of that in America these days. Especially now-a-days when ever the two black leads are lovers and how they express their love for each other in sex or religiously or simply cheat on their spouse (THANK YOU TYLER PERRY). But, this movie should black love in a good way, not through sex or cheating on each other (AGAIN THANK YOU TYLER PERRY) but show it by going out their way to protect one another, how far they will go out there way for each other, and they express it by passionately kissing each other and they both live riding out to see another tomorrow. That's why I like Django because it's not a typical black cinema, it's something new, it's something different, and it gives the perfect definition of black love that I've haven't seen in a while
