I really like Haeneke's movies, Funny games (both versions are great) etc... Still this one is painfull to watch and depressing so I can't say I liked it. Still, it's a good movie, and I really like when the Spill crew at least trrriiiies to review art films. From what I understand : US critics / US audience are not used to anything else than "entertainment". When you review these films its allways the same : Broing, pace problems etc... When we watch movies from the US in europe, its allways the contrary we find them too quick, badly written, under written, the directing and cuts are too fast its epileptic entertainment at its best. I dont ask the Spill crew, being interested mostly in US movies and entertainment / pop culture to like every european artsy films. At least sometimes with Holy Motors or this one or Le chat du rabbin, they tries ! And they should go on trying even if more than often it fell short ! I'm sad to hear though that this movie didnt connect with the one from your crew who lost his father since I wd imagine that it we be made to ! This movie was hard to watch, but interesting, and yes it can be both hard to watch, slow and painfull and not a bad movie ! Art has NOT to be entertaining

I have to defend the film here. Now, "Amour" is probably my favorite film of 2012 so far. Now before you accuse me of being some pretentious artsy fartsy critic, bear in mind that "Skyfall", "Looper", "Frankeweenie" and "ParaNorman" are also in my Top 10. So I don't look down on genre pictures or popular blockbusters. "Amour" is OF COURSE difficult to sit through and it's definitely not for everybody. I can understand someone who are not used to the cinema of Michael Haneke to find this film intolerable. I take issue with the cheap potshots of people who liked this film. Believe it or not, there are people who saw this film and were moved by it including me. More than any other film this year, this movie stayed with me and resonated with me more. It's not an easy film to digest, that's for sure but who says that films SHOULD be easy to digest? Who says films should try and go for the easy emotions and the familiar beats? This film does not do that. It takes its time for the story to unfold, lingering on static shots so we'll be immersed in the characters and the situation. It's fine if you do not take to this style of filmmaking. I wish you guys avoid potshots at the people who have praised it. It's no better than those artsy-fartsy critics who look down on you for being "Avengers" fan boys.

I'd recommend Diving Bell and the Butterfly as a replacement, it's kind of a similar concept, but you get a greater sense of plot and characters. And as a kicker for people thinking the Crew hates these films, Cyrus reviewed it as a full price movie.

Haneke directed the much praised Cashe which frustrated the hell out of me so I probably will not watch this film unless forced upon. Rottentomatoes can suck a d!ck for all i care, I go to Spill.com to be entertained and more often than not I actually very much agree with the reviews. So as long as they keep reviewing films i'll be listening!

There's a lot of venom being throw in the comments section of this review, so I'll keep my opinion simple. My opinion will disagree with many others and I am not here to insult those with whom I disagree.

I have watched two films by director Michael Haneke: Funny Games (the American remake) and Cashe. Both movies bored me -- bored me to the point of frustration. I have decided life is too short to waste any more time watching Michael Haneke movies, despite how much critical praise they get.

I respect and appreciate the spill crew's opinion on this movie. I come to this website because the movie reviews entertain me and because I often agree with the viewpoints of the critics that are heard here. Dividing them from "actual critics" because of their opinions is both prejudiced and short-sighted. The years they have spent recording reviews meant to both entertain and educate is proof enough of their status as legitimate critics, whether or not everyone who listens agrees with them.

And in regard to praising art films because they are art films, well, sometimes ladies and gentlemen, the emperor has no clothes.

You're actually going to attempt to back that up, Mason, or are you going to do what you usually do and just give some limp-wristed non response showing that you don't have a leg to stand on and you have nothing of actual value to say?

Please, point out to lil ignorant ol me where I'm wrong in calling people like you annoying and psuedointellectual film brats. ENLIGHTEN ME =)

Christ you're worst than Dominick....I'm still not convinced you two aren't the same person.

Ok, having not seen the movie yet I cannot give my opinion fairly on the movie itself. However, to counter your attack on the critics who like this and to just get it off my chest.....WHAT THE HECK WERE GUYS EXPECTING? IT'S A MOVIE ABOUT OLD AGE AND DEMENTIA! IT IS A SLOW AND PAINFUL PROCESS! THAT IS THE POINT! IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS APPROACH TO OLD AGE MOVIES AND YOU DON'T LIKE THE OPPOSITE APPROACH LIKE THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, WHAT THE FRAK IS IT GOING TO TAKE?

Ok, my ranting is over. I still need to see the movie to judge it fairly, but seriously I have been really annoyed with your condescending to critics because they disagree with your opinion. I know you guys really love The Avengers (I do too!), but there are other kinds of movies just as good if not better that do not need superheroes. So people disagree with each other? Big surprise! Welcome to the 21st century. They are not pretentious or anything for liking this film. Some people genuinely like a film without any preconceptions or expectations. That's totally fine. You guys do the same so just be fair with that.

I'm not upset that you dislike the film. That's fine. Not everyone should agree on something. I am upset that you presume other people are ignorant for liking something you don't. That's a very childish response and it is something you guys really need to be careful with how you approach that. Critics are not sheep. A lot of them can give genuine opinion for why a film is good or bad. Treat their opinion like that and they will treat your opinion the same.

I've been curious to see this since one of my critic pals here in town loved.  I'm happy to hear the Crew weigh in though.

I've seen other g'art'bage films by this director and have no desire to sit through another ponderous, overstretched piece of paint drying with no arc.

Do you want them to lie and say it was touching or entertaining to them when it wasn't?

At least we have a choice, props to SPILL for seeing the shitty ones I'd skip

    ;)

Michael Haneke has always been an over-praised director as far as I'm concerned. He obviously understands his craft, but his subject matter in addition to its presentation have always hurt his films more than they've helped. I'm sure plenty of people disagree with me, and if you're one of those people that loves Funny Game Games, more power to you. Just give me Tarkovsky or Bresson instead.

    @Cat...Fondling (.-.)

Well that's Spill humor for ya...certainly not the first time they've used the snoring gag for films they find uninteresting. Dunno what to tell ya *shrugs*

Dubya, maybe people would be OK with the review had it not started with the crew snoring.

how come these movies get these good reviews and they are horrid.

  • January 04, 2013 at 5:39 AM, Denny said ...

Oh for the love of....again people?

So they don't kiss the ass of EVERY SINGLE hyped-up avante garde/foreign film that they come across.

    Boo. Fucking. Hoo.

It's always the same thing when a review like this comes up; they bash on these type of Oscar Hyped artsy/foreign films that YOU like, so you start calling them Dummy McDumbDumbs and mongoloids and "Not TRUEEEEEE film fans!" and other Pretentious Film School Brat crap just because they go off the rails from yourself and "everyone else." Sure, it's no secret that Genre films are more their bread-and-butter than anything else, but seriously, cut the crap already. Films like Synecdoche, New York, Holy Motors, Moonrise Kingdom, Coriolanus, Monsieur Lazhar, Melonchalia, The Skin I Live In, Another Earth, Rudo y Cursi (made it on Korey's Top 10 of 2009 FFS), hell any Criterion Collection Blu-ray the Remote Viewing guys review, those got fine reviews despite being "artsy" and "foreign". (It's sad that I even have to name these off....)

They've reviewed and liked all KINDS of films from ALL over the spectrum, and they make their arguments for liking or disliking them. Disagree with them if you will. Disagree vehemently if you must. But honestly, enough is enough with the stupid "hurr hurr dey only leik stoopid explosiony Twilight movees so dey not reeeel critics hurr hurrrrrrrrrrr" shit already just because they dogpile on stuff like Cosmopolis or Meek's Cutoff or Tree of Life. It's just as ignorant and annoying as what you claim the Spill Crew to be doing. Come up with something better than that already.

Should they stop taking cheap shots at other critics? Sure. Korey mentioned it himself in a recent ACOCO that he doesn't see himself as a "typical critic" anyways (I suspect the rest of the crew feel that way as well), but that's really not an excuse for the potshots so that particular habit probably could afford to die out at least a little bit. But again....shut up Mason Daniel. ;)

Didn't feel the way you guys did, although I do agree that it is not a pleasant movie to watch.  While you guys felt that it didn't succeed in what it was trying to do, I felt it did with flying colors.  I loved it for being so painful to watch, and even though I don't think I will ever watch this again, I do tip my hat to the filmmaker.

this scored 92% on RottenTomatoes 'Powered by beautiful acting and an uncharacteristically tender script from Michael Haneke, Amour is an honest and heartwrenching depiction of love in old age.'

I'm probably going to go see this anyway, just because every single major reviewer I've seen (other than you guys) is praising the hell out of it, but now I'm expecting the worse. Thanks for the review.
