FULL Price here,...I think CoHOst was nudged over to BtSex, due to the Raimi factor :p

DeFranco was adequate, and had some shining moments. I Totally agree with the actress being a bit off after the transformation, she felt like a 'Glee' version of herself.  The CG of China girl was amazing. Texture, depth of field on the close ups...wow.

The World of OZ,...Raimi HAD to of did his homework and homage dues to this old Disney short.

Old Folks like Leon should know this,...the Reeds playing the pipes instantly took me here.

    Minor SPOILER:

I was waiting for the Ruby slippers,..but I guess that'll be for the sequel, eh?

I thought it was kind of amazing visually. But James De Franco:)....? His performance was strange and detached for me. I thought he was poor actually

While understandable, I'm rather sad you guys mention "the original" approximately three million times and yet mention the books like... once? My point is that while the 1939 musical is a classic milestone in film, it essentially steps all over the books, such that any attempt at going back to them and mining their universe is shot down in favor of trying to emulate the classic movie.

Funny how this movie seems to be a case of 'you'll either love it or hate it' .

And personally I wasn't very fond of it at all and also disagree with just about everything positive you guys said about this movie!

    My review for it

First time I go to see a movie AFTER listening to one of your reviews... (after 5 years, yeah)
Well some of it was great. But after the China Girl plot, I was trying hard to see what you liked so much. There's just so much cliché - dialogue / noise / jokes.
I mean thats the kind of things you always joke about in other movies... Why give it such a sure high full price rating? I don't understand. Watching this movie I was wondering why it didn't get the Spill-bash it deserved (for it's end at least)

Still a very very nice family movie, a Great and Powerful one too (Brianpuned)

My Review of Oz The Great and Powerful

Saw it yesterday morning in IMAX 3D and I freaking loved it! I almost cried near the end (judge me) The china girl especially made me cry. The 3D was awesome (made the flying monkeys even scarier), The land of Oz was beautiful, The acting was good (except James Franco bored me),  Finley the monkey and the little china girl were likeable, and it's the best live action kids movie I've seen in recent memory.

Just got back from seeing it. It's a very beautiful looking movie, but the script and characters are pretty dull. The dialogue was too flat and the performances of some of the actors reflected how poorly written the dialogue was. James Franco is woefully miscast as Oz. You need a certain level of charm and wit when playing a con man. Franco had no charisma and it was likely watching him read off cue cards. The unnecessary and forced romance between him and another character didn't add anything to the film either. Milia Kunis, an actress I really like, was also a weak point for me. I liked her in the beginning, but she couldn't sell her character later in the film. Her character arc was handled poorly. Rachel Weiz and Zach Braff did a solid job with the material they were given. No complaints when it came to them. Joey King, the actress who voiced China Girl, was the stand-out in the film. She was the only character I had a real attachment to. Like I said before, it's a very pretty film. The CGI can be jarring at first, but I adapted to it quickly. The Emerald City, the Flying Monkeys and China Girl were my favorite CGI effects. The visual effects team, not Sam Raimi, deserve the credit for that. I'm just sad that the story, characters and writing couldn't match the visuals in the film. I went into this film with a very optimistic attitude. I've never read the other Oz books, but I wanted to see the world that L. Frank Baum created. I think Sam Raimi was the wrong choice for this movie. He has an eye when it comes to special effects and action scenes, but he fails when it comes to directing actors. Sadly, it's just a Rental for me.

The worst part of this to me was franco's script (i honestly like him alot as an actor, but moments where he said stuff that just sounded off). But I loved all 3 of the witches, Finly the monkey, the China Girl especially (yeah, her story made me cry too, what?)

Holy shit Co-Host, Better Than Sex?! Unbelievable man. No way was this movie that good.

Best James Franco movie ever? Wow. I couldn't disagree more. I felt this movie solidified the idea that James Franco simply isn't leading man material. He's best as a side character or cameo.

The film worked alright as a kid's movie, but felt flat and unoriginal throughout. The climax was entertaining, but flawed, and the CG backgrounds were terrible whenever characters were present. It often made me think of George Lucas shooting on a green set.

    Rental at best

High rental for me. I had fun with it, but I have no interest in ever seeing it again.

And you're not alone Leon, I liked Spider-Man 3 too. It was multiple times better than that turd call Amazing Spider-Man.

Just seen it, and I'm good with the film, but not great with the film.  It has its heights, but there are for me pacing issues and a certain lack of whimsy.  I'm not talking songs to endear, just lulls and a certain darkness (which is good for witches).  But I'm hurting most of the 3D, maybe my theater was slightly out of focus, but I got more than a few moments of 3D blur ~ so there were scenes that were muddied.  Overall, I'm glad the movie was made and I'll probably own it on release ~ just the 2D version.

After seeing this movie today, the script has it's highs and lows but the first part that takes place in Kansas was just bad.  The main plot of the wicked which being created because she was screwed over by Oz come across like a punchline plus how can I root for a jerk like Oz.  Didn't care for this nor will I remember this film next week.

Just saw the film. I'll let the guy who wrote the Batman Animated Series sum up how I feel about it in his Twitter review:

Paul Dini: Just saw "Oz the Mediocre and Puny." There is so much good original Oz material. Why keep sequal/prequaling that one MGM flick?

@Sabrorisser No. I think it's important to have discussions on the media surrounding a film. The paratext can have as much importance as the text. Trailers, posters, and all of our collective discussions contribute to our cultural understanding of a given work. For instance, let's say the majority of fantasy films feature strong female characters. But if those characters are in the background of the poster and their roles are minimized in the trailer, or if they are always side characters in films, then for the majority of people who don't see every film that comes out it sends a message about the role and importance of women's stories and of women in society.

Of course I wouldn't make a decision about a film before seeing it for myself but the issues I have with the film are such that I don't feel the need to see it in theaters.
