There's an interesting article here about how sexist some of the reviews for SATC by male reviewers have been...

OK, personally SATC is not on my list of faves. In fact I have never watched an episode and Lord forgive me if I watch the movie. However I do agree with Lizzie that, for e.g., Superbad was not exactly the pinnacle of film acheivement and yet oh man, it way "saying something". Really? To whom? Yet SATC does the same for women and it sucks.

I have a pair of ovaries and all I gotta say is I'm taking Carlyle's advice. I /know/ I will not, in any universe, in any sense of the word, be entertained by this movie. I'd rather sit through every Star Trek movie twice, having only seen scattered episodes of Next Generation and DS9. Nothing anyone says will make me consider paying for this, and if I had to go by a rating, I'd say you need to add a 'catch it on cable.'

Even though I think the Spill Crew is a little biased about the review (because personally I thought they were going to send Edie to go see it), I fuckin' Love it! Best review ever! LOL

will not go see this movie! after the first season i counldnt watch anymore because i thought they were whiney and were on my last nerve. we have always had a double standard for men and women. maybe someday it will be ok/cool to be whiney self-centered sluts. i hate chick flicks. they always portray women falsely. emotionally screwed up, baggage carrying psychos. give the spill crew credit for sitting thru it!

Man this was one of the funniest reviews you guys have done in a long time.

Yea...I remeber this being announced and the first words to come out of my mouth were "Oh my God..Why?" I tried to give the show a chance..but after about 3 minutes, I had to do something else before I destroyed that TV. I could not watch that show, and I will not go anywhere near this movie, so I must commend the Spill Crew. As far as Lizzie's arguement that it's bashed because it's aimed at women..I'm not seeing it. From what I hear from this review, it has elements of other movies which were completely railroaded by these guys (Harlod and Kumar and Good Luck Chuck are first to come to mind) and they were completely geared towards men. Now..how is it sexist that the crew ran over these movies yet gave this movie a better review? Possibly because they knew it wasn't for them(Except for Carlyle, which I probably would have agreed with). Yes, there are a few man movies that were given bad reviews by the crew(Forgetting Sarah Marshall was given a Rental by Leon if memory serves correctly). Saying the Crew doesn't like this movie because it is geared toward women is like saying they will like every action movie because they are guys *Cough* HITMAN *Cough*. If you liked the movie, I can't stop you from liking it, that's your choice. If it's what you like, nothing I can say will change that. Enjoy it. I know I got my fair share of movies that others will look down on. Just don't bring in social issues because you didn't like their views on a movie.

Lizzie, there are a lot of movies aimed at men that have received more bashing than this movie, all negative reviews I've read about Sex and the City, including the Spill Crew's one have been very lenient, almost too nice. Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't like the film, if you do, good for you, but there are people who will downright hate it, and there will be people who will like it, including straight men. While I do agree with you in that maybe we need a female point of view, it might still be a negative one. The thing is, it all comes down on whether or not you liked the show and how willing you are take this. Is just like the Simpsons movie, I liked it, but I know it was a bad movie and I understand why many people criticized so badly. And that's the real problem, while you please the fans, and movie has a much wider audience and it should be able to be entertaining for everyone, not just the fans of the original show. Personally, I won't fucking go anywhere near this movie. And yeah, what's the deal with the clothing? It's so ugly, and I'm sorry, you can find perfectly beautiful shoes that aren't that expensive.

Damn Lizzie You called them out. hehe but you made alot of good points. I dont know why they all went to see that movie anyway. We all knew they weren't going to like it, they should have just sent Eddie and called it a day. Or maybe Eddie and co host just for humor. But the review was still funny. I love how Cyrus thought buying a Sex in the City box tape would have got him sex. Hahaha Men...

You're right Lizzie, I apologize. The review was funny though (i liked it better than the movie : ) )

  • May 30, 2008 at 4:20 PM, Lizz G said ...

Krossx24 - It's not a documentary. It's piece of entertainment. Yes it's based on a character who writes a column but my point was this film has been hailed as an insight into women and all that nonsense when at the end of the day - it's just a story. My point was this film has taken a massively bashing when it's not that bad as a film. Because it's aimed at women though it's seen as bad. It's been judged much harsher than a bad film that's aimed at men.

  • May 30, 2008 at 4:13 PM, KrossX24 said ...

How can you say that this is not a social comment piece within itself when the entire point of this movie is that it is the experiences of Sarah Jessica Parker's character as she writes a social comment peice on women (called Sex and the Cty) Lizzie? I agree that women are judged very differently in these cases with movies but point is this particular movie did not make up for the lesser points. I think based solely ont he show event he spill crew would agree this movie had potential to be something cool (more so for women than men) but sad truth is in many opinions it did not.

Agrree with you ET Phone Home, i literally use fashion to kill. $400 shoes are a must have if you want the job done , their nail a guy in the eye . also french knifes make great accesories!

  • May 30, 2008 at 3:39 PM, Lizz G said ...

I seriously doubt that anyone who's criticising the women for buying expensive possessions wouldn't buy an Aston Martin or Classic Ferrari given half the chance. Most people would never have driven one but they'd still buy one if they had the money because it's a status thing. Same as spending $400 on a pair of shoes. I don't agree with it but I know plenty of men who waste money on equally as stupid purchases but because they're "man toys" that's more justifiable than shoes.

I have no plans to see this movie... after hearing this... I seriously have no plans to see this movie. I must say I am still laughing about the muppet skin shoes. It's just fashion... but In my opinion fashion is evil. It's a bunch of people who get together who make things to make women look bad, and convince them it looks good. UGH! Also, why would you pay 500$+ for an ugly Louis Vuitton hand bag that, guess what, is just one big advertisement for Louis Vuitton... oh wait... that's right... it's french! French=Fashion.

And most male movies completely objectify women to be nothing more than a trophy for the "hero". Why then when a "female" film portrays men in a way they don't like men are up in arms about it! Maybe Miranda wasn't having sex with him because she was stressed out and tired from having to support her husband financially. He works as a bartender, she works as a lawyer. I hate the way women are expected to be perfect in movies whereas it's ok for guys not to be.

mostly because female adult bff movies make Guys look like bad guys. i am surprise Korey and the boys survive , after he made that comment outloud "YES THAT"S WHY HE IS NOT HAVING SEX WITH YOU!!!!" the girls when "How could you!", their don't recognize their own imperfections. but this movie is okay... on the Adam sadler and steve O level.

  • May 30, 2008 at 3:15 PM, Lizz G said ...

Yeah but so what. It's a film. It's not meant as a social comment piece about women. There are plenty of films where the male protagonists achieve little less than "getting the girl" which is the same as what these ladies were doing. I also hate the way when it's a film aimed at women men are embarrassed to be seen at the cinema. I wasn't sat in Iron Man freaking out that one of my female friends might see me because god forbid I be seen watching a MAN's film.

at least Iron Man care about the world and did something about it LIZZ. these ladies just have sex . they were gold diggers at their worse.

May I say something... I am gay, and I loved the show, but I HATED THIS MOVIE! (and also on your other comment almost everyone I know who is a fan of the show has hated the movie so far)

  • May 30, 2008 at 2:53 PM, Lizz G said ...

I never watched the tv show but I enjoyed the film. I find it weird though that a female targeted movie is criticised in a different way to how other films are criticised. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was described by you guys as being "one big dick joke" and you liked it. You call this a "dick joke film for women" and now that's a bad thing. As soon as it's a women's film then suddenly everyone starts harping on about all this gender bullshit and everyone's judging the characters for being these evil, self-centred women. No one went on about how Russel Brand's character was a self-centred twat in Forgetting Sarah Marshall but when it's a women that becomes an integral part of the criticism. If you're not going to like a film because the characters are bad people then that means you can't like Iron Man, because Tony Stark was an arms dealing, womanising, alcoholic. No one moaned about that. As a film, it's not that bad. There's no deep and meaningful message in there but who said there had to be?
