i want to see all the boston based movies (the fighter, the departed, the town, ext.) but i haven't...i've seen bit and pieces of the departed...and it seemed good...but out of all the dropkick's songs, why shippin' up to boston? i love that album, and shippin' up to boston is a good song, but the worst track on the album...and i've seen them live...hell, my mom brags about seeing them at cantones.

In fairness to the boxing scenes, the real "Irish" Mickey Ward was a welterweight, IE: a 140 lb. guy, so neither he nor any of the guys he fought were ever heavy hitters. And in fairness to Mark Wahlberg, through the larger half of the movie, he was the guy in his brother's shadow.

Granted, the movie isn't as epic as its trailers evidently want us to believe it is, but it's still one of the year's best films I think. A full price to say the least.

Great movie; however, I disagree with the Spill Crew. I thought Wahlberg was great in this film (as was the rest of the cast).

Loved the movie, too bad they didn't show the Gatti fights which made him famous in the first place, but I suppose they wouldn't have helped the story.

This movie has permanently ruined for me ever since I heard the awful, downright depressing news that Russell is directing the Uncharted movie...with Mark FUCKING Wahlberg as goddamn Nathan Drake. Fucking ridiculous. I just can't enjoy watching this movie knowing that somewhere out in the world, Mark Wahlberg is trying to be Nathan Fillion.

Just saw this yesterday and it was a really good movie, however I didn't care for mark wahlberg not so much cause i don't think he can act he tends to have range to act in some movies and then doesn't care for others, but christian bale stole the film for me i wanted to watch his character go through all the shit he was going through.   considering the fact i never saw any of these fights and only heard of him through interviews with mark wahlberg the fights looked realistic in every aspect, the directing was really good considering david o. Russel hasn't made anything that really stands out in my mind. (didn't care for three kings)

Rock-solid movie. The editing style and music choices reminded me of Scorsese's movies quite a bit. Those elements plus the whole big family ensemble dynamic made me think of Goodfellas throughout the movie. I thought the film was just really solid entertainment overall.

You guys didn't mention how great Amy Adams is in this! Her performance is a total 180 from her typical reserved-quiet-girl style of acting. Not to say that her usual acting method is bad; I love her in practically everything she does (save for Leap Year.)

Russell does a really great job of keeping the film moving with great editing tactics and lively pacing. There isn't a boring frame in this film. The story is somewhat familiar, but the great performances and writing elevate the movie to greatness. One of the year's best. I can't decide if I was more impressed this year by James Franco's amazing performance as a free-spirited hiker or by Christian Bale's portrayal of a crackhead boxer. Those are my top two picks for best actor!

    @ChristianDB

I do love what they did with the film. I was only there for the fight scenes, yet when i saw the movie, i wanted to see more of the family trials and tribulations instead. So it surprised me that I was always looking forward to more of the personal side (even during the fights).

Its cool you were watching Batman like that lol...the depressed Batman. "The Dark Depression"...but yea, definitely a Must See movie, not sure if you've seen it yet or not, but you'll love it.

I'm still amazed by the performances though, mainly Bale and Leo.

Just saw the midnight showing last night instead of TRON (event though i must see that still..and actually there was MORE people in The Fighter's showing than Tron surprisingly).

But...WOW...not because im biased for watching some of it in 2009, play out in the ring...they did a SUPERB job w/ the story and everything.

The funny part is its true, that the most interesting and heaviest parts were during the family trials and tribulations.

The performances were phenomenal, the directing was very fitting, the original score was perfect for it along w/ the great use of classic songs for the soundtrack to fit the era...wow, just EVERYTHING about this movie blew my expectations away. They EVEN kept 1 line that Bale said during shooting that i feared they would take out (lets just say its about a "fuckin cup of coffee" :).

This movie is easily as good, if not better than The Social Network but then again i hate ranking movies.

This week will be a busy movie week, i mean im still trying to see True Grit / Tron / Black Swan and a couple others, and they ALL come out when im pretty much broke lol.

The Fighter at midnight at my local theater was truly special to me. Hard to explain but I guess its because the other movie i was in the background for...only got a limited release and barely played anywhere (The Great Debaters)..and NOW, The Fighter is EVERYWHERE. And it was playing on the biggest screen available (along w/ TRON)...so the surround sound was perfect for the fight-scenes and strong dialogue.

Best movie experience I've had all year.

Out of all the crapfest movies thats been coming out...FINALLY this Friday, my area gets a bunch of fascinating movies coming out all at once (kinda wish it was spread out a lil more)...because I LOVE Midnight Showings..but they only occasionally do it on the night b4 it opens and thats it, and this week its 2 movies i REALLY REALLY REALLY wanna see...BOTH have a midnight showing on Thursday night...

The Fighter & Tron: Legacy...now i know Tron would be a cool midnight show, but then again I could spend less on it by seeing a matinee of it over the weekend, since 3D is expensive here..and i could possibly see The Fighter that night..even though ill probably be the ONLY one in the whole theater. So...its an extremely tough decision for me.

The Fighter at midnight...or Tron at midnight (being $13 for Tron...$9.50 for The Fighter).

If anyone has an opinion on what they would do in my position...please say it so its easier to decide lol.

The Fighter is kind of personal in a way  because i was on set for each fighting scene at the Boxing Ring in the background...and it was incredible seeing everyone do their own stunts, and passionate acting. While Tron is simply stunning-looking and would be a cool movie for late-night.

SOMEONE HELP ME DECIDE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH (by the way i already know this will be the better movie, im sure).

The movie looks good, much like Cinderella Man, but you got to ask yourself: Who cares about James Braddock or Mickey Ward? They should make more movies about good boxers like Sugar Ray Robinson or something like that

@Mark Yeah it was at Tsongas, never been in a movie so why not, it was fun but they're cheap bastards for not turning on the AC. It's a hockey rink for God sakes.

Also, I lived near the top donut  ( right outside my back porch) where they filmed. Got to see  batman look miserable all day. They were pretty authentic with keeping it in the ghetto in this movie, I really want to see the locales and what they used. I remember having to go across the bridge and even during down time, I couldn't get across because the shitty helpers justifying their jobs blocked off the road. I literally had to go around the city to get to a bank, with no car at the time :/.  I'm really glad I'm out of that city although a lot of movies and commercials were filmed there during my year stint in Lowell. Weird.

I really hope Bale gets an Oscar nom for this. Hes such an amazing actor when he chooses his roles wisely(Machinist, Equilibrium) This movie is one of the last ones I REALLY wanna see before the year is out. Excellent reviews guys.

@ChristianDB, was it the same days i was there? the 3 days in a row at Tsongas Arena? Just curious cause those days were pretty crazy...and although i dont live in Lowell, i can see what you mean.It was my 1st time going back there since i was a kid, and looked the same way...but luckily I was in the arena while it was being shot lol...although it was hot as hell in there.

Cant wait to see this movie.

I was actually an extra in this movie and most of the movie was filmed at the shitty city I was living in. Micky ward is all messed up and a bar regular. I hope this movie does well because he's kind of a good guy. Lowell, MA is a horrible city and it will swallow you up.

@Quenched They don't just talk about the looks of the girls. If you listen to The Tourist review they talk about how pretty Johnny Depp is. If you go back and actually listen there are plenty of reviews where they bring up the look of an actor. Did you not realize they mentioned how Christian Bale looks in this review? They're not attracted to men so they're not going to say the same things for Mark Walhberg as they would for Amy Adams. That's just the way it is dude.
