    I'd give this a solid matinee, I think that the whole buddy aspect played out a lot more through thee movie if you were looking for it. And I think that it wasn't propaganda, but the message was that these two people, despite hating each other, can be freinds. I think there was some reason to not like the british as well as the romans, they killed people too, and did it in really horrific ways. And I'd say channing tatum did a great job in this, and I did find some of it very horrific, like when he drowned that guy or when both Marcus and the bad guy kill a kid.

    I actually loved this movie but i'm a history buff so I guess I come at it from a different angle. To me the final battle was great, seeing the old veterans of the 9th fight to the death fro the Eagle instead of running away was pretty powerful. But I do agree that like many of you guys Tatum exceeded my expectations in this ten fold.

    @Topher James Rodrigues:

    That's c500AD when the Saxons appear in Britain. You might've been thinking of the Danes when you said c900AD (who actually arrived in Britain c800AD, but let's not split hairs here).

    Carlyle doesn't have enough time to do regular reviews with the Crew, so get your fix on A Couple of Cold Ones. I miss Carlyle in the regular reviews though :(

    Darill Hanna was in The Clan of the Cave Bear, Quest for fire was with Rey Dawn Chong. I'm sure I spelled the names wrong so don't hate on me

    <worthless information> These would be a group of people called the picts, they are part of what make modern scotts. but the Scott-Celts do not come into Scotland until later. The Angles and The Saxons dont appear till around c900AD

    @kevin miller I really agree. Its okay for ANY movie set in antiquity (doesn't matter where) to have all the actors with British accents and if you deviate from that people get upset, its ridiculous. I have no problem with the authoritative American accent "a la" Ben Hur and The 10 Commandments style.

    Sorry y'all but Darryl Hannah was in 'clan of The Cave Bear' which was a completely different film than 'Quest For Fire'.  This movie review makes it sound like more proof that Donald Sutherland will do anything for a paycheck and maybe Channing Tatum will be his succesor.  Here's a question: Which movie was more watchable, this one or Clive Owen in King Arthur?

  • February 11, 2011 at 6:58 PM, said ...

    Ok.  I know I will sound like a "bad film" expert with this correction but, since I am, here it goes.  Rae Dawn Chong was in Quest for Fire.  Darrel Hanna was in Clan of the Cave Bear.  Both bad films about "prehistoric" people having cave sex.  The confusion is understandable.  I just couldn't help myself.

    I know I'll go see this movie with my brother. We both kind of love this kind of movies (the old civilization war movies and sword fighting and stuff that is) =D

    they shoulda dropped Tatum and cast his neck as the lead role. seems like the neck was by far better in this movie.

    @kevin miller

    Fair enough. Neither of us has seen the film, it seems, so i can't really make a very objective judgment...at least you have seen the trailer. As for the critique of this film though, i think it has a very esoteric audience in that, well...when most people want an epic roman-empire story they rent a copy of "the gladiator" or some such other (I'm guessing) more entertaining film. But if just can't get enough of this historical period and the fictions centered around it hey,   more power to you. I realize i probably can't appreciate these ancient military flicks on the same level that you can.

    @Tyler Hudson

    no, i don't really get that impression. i personally think Cyrus was reading way too much into it. there isn't anything like that in the trailers (that's all i can go on), and i'm the kind of person who thinks anyone who joins the military is a rube. think about it, if they were trying to go for that angle, they would have had the main characters be a group of close-knit soldiers. that's what the military crowd sees to get their rocks off. "its about the man next to you," thats what they always say. Alexander was about a military commander who fought to gain a huge empire. that wasn't about patriotism, was it? this is aimed more at people who think ancient warfare is cool (a camp which i'm a member of).
