I wonder if the Spill crew wouldn't have minded the Spielberg homages so much if he wasn't involved in the movie. For example, Attack the Block is so obviously an homage to early John Carpenter movies, but you guys loved that.

Seen it last night, and liked it, deff worth a matinee or fullprice, and i've seen lots of speildberg movies.

Just to be clear you guys as critics and people I'm open to your opinions and thoughts on this movie. However I'm not sure you guys understood the point of this whole movie. Yes its a "love letter to Speilberg" but thats the whole point. I knew and understood that long before the film came out. Its like saying the Dark Knight was nothing but a love letter to the Batman character and mythos and then condemming the film because of that.

I will have to fully disagree with you folks on this review though I did find your review entertaining regardless

    one question and one observation:

any chance you guys weren't in the mood for this time of flick that night, maybe something that affected your opinion?

I'm surprised that no one thought the film director kid was an homage to Spielberg rather than Abrams, especially since the kid was more in the vein of Spielberg with his filming style.

But don't get me wrong, I still think you guys are the most entertaining movie critics with a podcast

Allow me to bleat along with the rest of the sheep by saying I loved it and you Spill guys are WRONG!

Just kidding. I did love it, but you guys can believe whatever.

    @Jean Genie

It was the same over here in the States. I'm not entirely sure why Abrams cut that shot from the theatrical cut of the film while keeping the rest of the scene basically the same way we saw it in the trailers. I do have two theories, however:

    1. That shot was shot specifically for the trailer to raise the audience's curiosity. The shot itself provokes a lot of questions as to what's trying to get out, why it's on a train, and why the Air Force is involved.

    2. The shot he used in the actual cut of the film focused much more on Joe Lamb's reaction to what was busting out of the train car. So, perhaps Abrams just wanted to keep the focus on Joe's character and his reaction to the whole situation rather than to the situation itself.

But still, even with those theories in mind, I don't feel like keeping that shot in the theatrical cut of the film would have hindered the film in any way. So -in a very roundabout way-...I dunno.

I'm so mad you guys didn't fall madly in love with this movie the way I did!  I'm going to pick some random movies that you gave a better rating to and pretend as if that's a valid argument as to why this rating should be void!  I'm so pissed to learn that there are other opinions besides my own!  I give this website a FUCK YOU!  Don't give me any of that "we didn't say we hate the movie.  We just didn't love it" bullshit!  It's all or nothing Mr. Coleman!

I agree with a lot you said.  The kids didn't annoy me though.  There were so many sub plots it was hard to tell what the main story was supposed to be.  The big difference between this and M. Knight is that what Shamalan does is pull some shit so far out of left field it doesn't make since.  It get's so ridiculous that it makes you mad that you had to wait for something so stupid.  Super 8 was a bit of a disappointment, but it shouldn't make you mad.  I think you should get the movie theater experience when you see this.  There are some scenes that I don't think would be as effective at home.  Matinee all the way.

I respect your guys opinion, even thought I loved this film.

But forget Super 8, what the Spill community really wants to know is your guys review of "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer."

Spill? y'all people be CRAZY! Just got back and I can't give this movie anything other than a "Better Than Sex"!

Only complaint I might have about bashing the whole "love letter to Speilberg" argument is that you will criticizes Abrams for getting all nostalgic and adding elements from movies he has seen from his past, but someone like Tarrentino has done the same thing his entire career and is genuinely praised for it.

I thought the characters were great, the emotions were real and I walked away from the movie completely satisfied! to each their own I guess.

    )))))SPOILER((((((

I loved this movie! This is why I see movies! I'll admit, it goes a little too fairy tale towards the end. In my head I was waiting for jets to fly by and shoot the spaceship out of the sky! (Dark ending to light story) No such luck but I'm cool with the high note. Letting go of the mom was a cool effect, closure, reconciliation, all good stuff. Coming of age, cold war paranoia, small town isolation... Sounds like my entire netflix account lol! This was really just right up my alley. The critter starts out as a mystery (Great) evolves into an evil monster (Cool) then turns humane and vulnerable (Super). Could it have developed some things faster? Yes. Narrowed its focus on certain relationships? Sure. BUUUUUT... I didn't want this movie to end! I was fine sitting there watching this all unfold! In fact there were parts that I felt were rushed or forced for time. There are four key relationships here; kid/dad, dad/alcoholic dude, alcoholic dude/daughter, daughter/kid. Then you had secondaries; kid/mom, kid/friend... This would've made a rowdy little miniseries! I'd have definitely tuned in! Anyway, I get it but I'm no critic or film student, just a ticket buying, popcorn munching, soda slurping moron who enjoyed everything in this movie and only wanted more!

I disagree with DRchika. Her opinion is fallible.

Maybe it's because I haven't seen enough Spielberg, but I must have missed most of those references. I love this movie. My only problems were the anti-climactic ending, and I would've liked one good, well-lit look at the whole creature. I asked a friend, after the movie, how many limbs it had.

I have to agree with the Spill Crew on this one. I was kind of disappointed with the film, so it's a high matinee for me. The ending was sooo anti-climatic. I loved the characters, but last half + ending keeps me from giving it a full price. And yes, I enjoyed First Class more than Super 8. Come at me.

WOW, I feel like I watched a completely different movie from you guys. Usually if I disagree with you guys (which isn't often) I can see where you were coming from. This review however made absolutely no sense to me.

This is the first review from spill I disagree with. I'm going to have to pop the cherry on this one and give it a Better then Sex! rating. That is just my opinion because I enjoyed the hell outta this movie.
