Lord. Have. Mercy. You all are my most trusted source of news. All manner of accolades, and rose petals strewn before your feet. You all crazy-assed brainacs have dissected the future of media more succinctly and accurately in 20 minutes than anything I have heard in the last twenty years.  Y'all would kick Nicolas Negroponte's ass so far up into his cranium that he'd...well, only be able to think with his ass. I may be drunk on duty free scotch at mid-day in a Six-star hotel in Singapore with decent wifi, and I may be neglecting my PowerPoint duties to waste my precious analytical resources multitasking with Tha Spill in the background as is my wont as a 2.0 slacket-cum-economist, but what I say is THE TRUTH: you are, to a man, the most insightful observers of The Culture, of anyone I know. Thank. You.

The only reason why, as a person born in the digital age, don't have any sympathy for printed press is that newspapers KNEW that the Internet was approaching. Had the printed press not decided to sit on their asses during this moment, and actually think of ways to profit off of this new technology at that time, they might not be in this boat.

I realize papers have the integrity that news websites don't have...yet. I mean it's not as if during the invention of the newspaper their weren't some shitty ones. I also have a problem with people blaming the death of the printed press is because the populations lack of intelligence. I blame that on the shitty education we are getting, despite living in an era of free information.

    Enjoyable review as always guys!

I've known news bloggers to possess some kind of arrogance over traditional paper outlets, but I've seen the same disdain for internet news coming from traditional press. Like the other media industries, newspapers have clasped their hands over their ears and pretended the digital age was not coming. Well it's here, and it's gaining momentum, thanks in no small part to the rise of tablet computers designed for easy reading. And like you guys very well pointed out, there's no reason why newspaper-quality writing cannot exist on the internet. Now, this would mean having to carry that brand name and put it up against the sea of news sites online, but this is the same deal that existed before hand.

And while it's true people have a tough time with the concept of pay on the internet, we've already seen this model being used for years on gaming websites. "Access" clubs as they call them, provide the same news that normal viewers get from the website, but are not treated to advertisements flying from every corner. This is all newspaper sites have to do as well. And given the rise and availability of flash technology, people can design new ways to place advertisements on websites and control the money flow from them.

Newspapers will be a thing of the past, especially as younger generations are more accustomed to technology. But quality news with integrity never goes out of style. People are learning to be more discerning of the news they hear online, and with that skill comes the attraction of people to particular news sites that they trust. It's a long road, but I'm very curious to see where this all takes us

Very interesting to listen to.  It is a condundrum.  Sure, print media is failing because people no longer want to pay for paper newspapers or magazines.  They just want to get it all free off the internet.  But, (and here's the catch), 95% of all the really good news you read on the net originated with a print publications.  They are the ones still spending money on foreign journalists, overseas offices, investigative reporters.  Once those printe guys go, all our news will be PR department approved news releases from governments and corporations.  That will really cut down on the political discussion in this nation.  That's a bad thing for Freedom of Speech and a continuance of a democratic repubic.

I still read the NYDN on my way to work. I'd rather have a physical thing to hold onto then reading it online. I mean being in New York I see everyone reading the paper on the train or the bus. But I guess readership isn't so high in other parts of the country.

yea I mean I agree with a lot of the points made about how maybe the film over glorified the ipad and the reality is that just not everyone owns a device like it. I feel like a major financial decision needs to be made behind the print and pad together because as a consumer, we will still be here accessing the media in likely, the most convenient

     format.

Thank you Matthew A. Sawtell. That's exactly how I see it.

I'd also like to add that web news isn't helping. Lowering reading/comprehension skills to a NY Post 3rd grader level because attention span on the web is much shorter so these headlines on CNN.com and other sites are very misleading.

As much as folks keep talking about "technology" being the cause - has alone really stepped back and checked a couple of things?

One - What is the overall literacy level in the U.S.? (i.e. Total Percentage of People that can read at a fifth grade reading level)

Two - How many people in the U.S. actually have access to an Internet accessable computer?

Hate to say it - throw those numbers into the fray, and a lot of arugments involved in this debate disolves.
