A political thriller advancing the theory that it was in fact Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare's plays; set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Essex Rebellion against her.

I thought this movie was a mess. Stick to action movie, Roland Emmerich.

Now I need to get me an Edward De Bere action figure.

But  sadly the only one that exists is somewhere in space built by Tom Servo as 'Action Oxfard.' ;p

Nice mentioning how beautiful the costumes are Korey!  I love what I am seeing from this movie.  Drama! Intrique!  Most of all - Interest in SHAKESPEARE!  Yes, it is extremely far fetched, most theater is anyway.  But my greatest love is that it is peaking interest into a fading pool of DRAMA - theater!  The other great thing about this is exposing the back of the theater  - in this particular instance Shakespeares The Kings Men - his company of theater artists.   I still hold firm that Hollywood or a New York company should complete a series in TV that resembles Slings and Arrows.  Behind the scenes in the theater is so awesome.  The blow ups, the battles, the inside jokes (which are funnier that the Office) are just waiting to be tapped into.  I know that this isn't really on the topic of the move per se but I'm really excited about the possiblities it opens up too.

    xoxo

    Cheers, Cindy

Whoa, whoa, hold the phone -- what's going on here? Last week, we had an entertaining film by Paul W. S. Anderson (The Three Musketeers)? And now you liked this film by Ronald Emmerich (about William Shakespeare, no less)?

What kind of bizarro world have I woken up to? What's next, Michael Bay making a good film?

Yo Cyrus you're my boy but Oedipus Rex was written by Sophocles not Shakespeare.

Now I'm discouraged to watch this, I would be one of those people who would walk away mad because is disrespects Shakespeare.

To all those people who are pissed that this movie doesn't follow historical fact, look up the many "historical" plays of the Bard wrote and match them up to actual fact.  Then tell me this movie isn't in the truest spirit of Shakespeare.

Did Cyrus just imply Shakespeare wrote Oedipus? Wut?

Personally, I don't think there's anything offensive about the premise of the movie itself, but I just KNOW there's going to be a sizeable group of idiots out there, who don't have any knowledge of Shakespeare, who are going to believe this is totally real because they saw it at the movies. I swear if anyone comes at me with, "Well, according to that film Anonymous ... " during a debate I will take a pencil to their eye socket.

I've always felt that the theory about Shakespeare not being the author of his work could be traced back to "I've spent loads of money going to exclusive schools and no one will take a second look at my manuscript and the greatest playwright of all time apparently did it without my level of education...... obviously he was a fraud.... oh and the Egyptians must of had alien help to build the pyramids because how could they do that without modern technology"

Remember that the same guy trying to tell you here that Shakespeare is a fraud was a few years ago telling you that the pyramids were built in 10,000 BC.

Anonymous is a fantastic piece of fiction, a 5 out of 5, but to think William Shakespeare was a charlatan is absurd!
