man, I know I am a little late to the party here but I thought I would throw in my two cents, and its more about the ending so some minor spoilers to follow.

I loved the movie and the way they were going up until the end.  I know not every movie has to have the same ol formula and I like how they treated just about everything until her last conversation with Patton's sister.

The whole movie they are setting up what a shit person she is and how all the things she thought would make her happy in life really dont.  how she views this small hick ass lake town and she cant understand that simple things in life can make you quite happy.  They were drilling that basic message the whole movie. she sucks, this way of life isnt that bad, maybe she can learn something and improve herself.

but then that last convo with patton's sister is like "no, fuck this town. you are better than this! you keep on being you"

    wat

That bugged me. it felt like the movie needed 5 more minutes of some sort of real ending where life had consequences and she had some sort of moment of realization.

Do you think Diablo Cody had a troubled high school life? Because all her scripts have related back to school or they talk about school or they show how much high school sucks GET OVER IT! and write on a different topic.

Cyrus sure seems to love the c-word lately. I think he has used it more over the last year or so than he has in the previous years of Spill. Interesting.

my question is do we root for her failure? sounds like we got a villain protagonist movie

I honestly loved it. Sure, Theron's character was unlikable, but when they revealed why she was so fucked up, I immediately felt for her in a pitying way. I'll admit that the whole resolve for her character felt too rushed, but everything else worked fine for me. I'd give it a Full Price.

Yeah these type of films in which an unredeemable character that doesn’t learn a thing at the end, most are straight up Rentals.  However the TV series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” does so many funny things with its characters, you have to rewatch it just because it’s so fascinating.
