Black swans are real you know. They're like the albino version of their species, as in they aren't as common. However it's more like a lab dog, as in they can be born from a white swan mother and can raise white chicks that are its biological offspring.I've personally seen many out in the wild many times before. Just informing of their existence... that's all. Check these pics out for examples.Amazing isn't it. Well I just love nature so please don't lash out on me.

I agree with those saying this is similar to perfect blue, but also think people should watch Paranoia agent, it is brilliant anime and much better than when they cry, because misses out all unneeded cutee rubbish, has real direction as story without letting viewer get comfortable and delivers really broken characters rather than just ranting looney's

on black swan, I love fact they show that like true mental illness, she hides it, but my only problem with it is they portray mental illness like some kind of acid trip, when think would have been lot stronger and more impacting if used little less vision and little more viewers own imagination by implication

Saw this movie last week and I as expecting something good but not as much as I thought! I JUST LOVED IT!!!! It reminds me of Fight Club in a way because of the main character psychoogical state. Nathalie Portman really deserves her Oscar.. She is unbelievable in her role as well as Vincent Cassel. Not sure I am impartial as Swan Lake was my favorite movie when I was young and I did ballet for nearly 10 years so I knew this movie would steal my good favors :) A must-see movie!!!

Quite a disturbing film.  Natalie Portman was excellent.  Different than anything else I have seen in a long time.

I still think her performance in her rap video was better than this movie.

    Finally saw this yesterday.

Went in with very high expectations.

Turns out they weren't high enough.

One of the best movies I've seen in the last few years.  I literally wanted to stand up and applaud.

Aronofsky takes the final step to greatness.  His mastery of the medium is finally beyond question.

Portman gives the defining performance of her career, probably the defining performance of the damn decade.

This is just a masterful film.

better than sex!! the fact that you get to see natalie portman play with herself deserves the admission itself and the end when she becomes the black swan its amazing. Had me gripped from start to finish.

    @Tea Party Rat:

Any time people dismiss something content due to the medium (be it music, film, tv, game, comic, written, anything), they lose an immense amount of my respect for both their ability to judge somethings artistic worth and in general. I know full well there are other styles of animation that also get swept under the rug of 'cartoons' and I don't like that either; but I was trying to focus more on the specific instance of this.

As for 'When They Cry' and Elfen Lied, I have been meaning to watch the former (and really should get on it, looks fairly twisted) and am somewhat critical of the latter for multiple reasons I would not like to get into right now but will sum them by saying I feel it is a bad rip off and mash up of many other good animes, Evangelion a key example among them. (Which if you think EL is good and haven't seen Evangelion, please do)

I think I would mostly just say due to their parallels that if you enjoyed Black Swan you will most likely enjoy Perfect Blue. It's somewhat hard to make direct comparison to some other 'mind fuck' animes at the moment as some of them I have not seen in years now.

@Nathan Seymour - I don't blame you, although I'll just state that generally all forms of animation are disregarded as being for children when many forms of adult animation exists. Some people even believe that anime is the only form of adult animation... clearly that's not the case. Granted, I won't use the obvious examples of adult cartoons that are vulgar and profane, but I will state that Plague Dogs is an animated film from the UK that is NOT for children. It's not so much inappropriate as it is a heart-wrenching subject matter that will even spiral a full grown adult into a deep depression.

I'm usually not a huge anime person myself, but I'll check it out if you recommend it. I generally like the more obscure anime since they deal with a lot more interesting themes and often don't follow the same tropes as the mainstream ones do. I'm a fan of Elfen Lied and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, would you say I'd like this then?

    @ Little Richard,

Yeah, it won't be due to Mansell's extensive use of the music from Swan Lake.  It's okay; it's still a great score.

    @ Nathan Seymour,

I remember Perfect Blue; now THAT movie creeped me the hell out!  It is a very good movie, but it made me uncomfortable as hell.

I would like to add something to me previous post:

It's not to say that I don't think this film isn't entirely deserving of the praise it has received and awards it likely will receive in the future. I am merely stating my disappointment that other works from the past and present of equal quality of story/characters sit in relative obscurity due to their medium (anime in this case, being something people generally dismiss as being for children, a unfortunate byproduct of the fact that it is animated immediately closing people's minds) instead of being recognized for their merits like this film is/will be. This is not say I'm putting anime on a pedestal; there are piece of shit animes just as in america films, and the shit always outnumbers the masterpieces; just that most of the really great works still get clumped up with the trash instead of being seen for what they really are.

I am just glad at least Miyazaki gets the both the critical respect and public dispersion his works deserve; but he is not the only storyteller in anime who's works aren't 'just a cartoon'.

So, I'm not sure if I'm the only person that has noted this in the comments, and I don't mean anything bad by this because I really liked this movie but I feel it needs to be said:

Anyone with a strong background in some of the anime classics with see the striking similarities between this movie and Perfect Blue. I think this page helps to elaborate on both the connections in both the films themselves and some connections Aronofsky has to Perfect Blue. - http://www.badassdigest.com/2010/12/14/borders-line-is-black-swan-the-perfect-blue-remake-weve-been-waiting-for

This is the first movie I've ever seen that made me weep tears of sheer terror.

This is the finest psychological thriller I've seen since Aronofsky's debut film Pi. Portman's incredible, Kunis surprised me with her acting chops, the dance chronography was great, the score was incredible, and the use of special effects was perfect. My heart was pounding for the last 40 minutes, and....

I need to stop myself from rambling. Better than Sex.

    @ Mr. Joseph

Odds are, the score will not even be considered for an Academy Award because of the Academy's strict guidelines.  According to the guidelines for best original score, the score must have been written by one composer and is completely original, as in the notesand rhythms were composed specifically for the film in question.  This film's score utilizes a lot of the music from Swan Lake, which technically makes this not an original score.  Remember Moulin Rouge and how "Come What May" didn't get nominated for best original song? Well, it was written for Baz Luhrmann's earlier film, Romeo + Juliet, butdidn't make it into the final cut.  Because of this factor, the Academy did not view this as a contender.

Didn't care for this one very much, not sure why.  Guess it just wasn't my kind of movie.  I'm not saying that it's not a good film.  Far from it, actually.  It's well-made, the actors and actresses do very well, and the dance choreography was very good.  It's just that most of the film is painful to watch, and very repulsive in some parts where it wasn't necessary.  Very stressful and not at all fun to watch.  I would personally give it a low matinee.

I went with my wife to watch this movie, and I absolutely loved it.  In my opinion, it was well done on all facets; great story, fantastic acting, a phenomenal score (that's gonna be robbed come awards season), and great cinematography.

This is definitely a full price in my book.
