FULL PRICE! I really dug this one. Russel Crowe was outstanding. The story was really well done also. I'm glad it lived up to what I had in my mind when I saw the trailer. Movie Questions

This was pretty entertaining and satisfying, in more of an old-fashioned story way.... Crowe makes this film, commanding and charming in every scene. Affleck is a block of wood, but it doesn't matter. There were some holes and some cliches, but excusable for the overall enjoyment. See me review this with my dad at youtube.com/GabnDad

"The last days of the newspaper"? Please, they've been saying that since the early 90's. It's a sappy attempt at creating a context that is total bullshit. I know that's what the movie was trying to do, but the premise itself is bullshit. It's an idea as poorly thought out as the rest of the movie, which was boring and predictable. The only thing that wasn't predictable was the Ben Affleck connection to the murder and by the time that information emerged I was way passed the point of caring. The acting was well played, particularly the exchanges between Russell Crowe and Helen Mirren, which for some reason I thought were hilarious. The scenes between Jason Bateman and Russell Crowe were also great. I was shocked to learn that Jason Bateman can act beyond his usual type cast (who knew?). Advice to future producers, if you want to make a movie involving corruption in government make sure your not really just making a boring episode of 24.

@Andrew: I am not a troll for expressing my displeasure with Carlyle's comments. I don't care what his political affiliation is, I just do not like hearing politics in movie reviews, regardless of who is saying it and who it is being said about. I was just expressing my opinion. Oh, and to clarify further, I was irked by the comment 'We like to elect our Republicans based upon their smile and their hair," not the douche-bag comment. Even though the rest of your comment was directed at Dan, I have a little to say on the subject. When you say that "Liberals put up with a nonpartisan President for 8 years," was that a typo? If it wasn't, then that line really makes no sense. Also, President Obama is far from being moderate. I could argue your other points, if you can call them that, but it would be an exercise in futility that I am far too familiar with.

For the people complaining about originality in Hollywood - it's called "The Movie Industry" for a reason. The goal of any major studio? Make money. Lots of it. Tons of it. "Scrooge McDuck swimming in his vault" amounts of money. That's why they relentlessly look for things that are/have been successful that Americans may not have heard about, and then recycle them for your hard-earned dollars. Why risk millions of dollars on a no-name writer with a unique idea when you can remake something from Britain, or just slap some brand-name marketing on it and cash the paycheck? You could make a movie about a geriatric clog-dancer named Lyle Pootenbottum, slap the title "Spiderman 4" on it, and you'd probably still make your money back on opening weekend. Originality, subtlety, and art won't make the down payment on the producer's new Cadillac. God bless indy films - the last remaining bastion of old school Hollywood.

In case any of the trollers who are whining about Carlyle's comment are unsure, Carlyle is actually a Republican. He was poking fun at his own party. It was tongue-in-cheek and meant to be somewhat sarcastic. Although, @ Dan: I am a liberal, and I try as hard as I can to respect both sides, but people like you really make me lose a lot of respect for the ultraconservatives. Liberals put up with a nonpartisan President for 8 years, and now there is a moderate Democrat in the White House and all of a sudden the conservative talking heads are emulating Chicken Little. I just don't get why their guy gets 8 years to screw up the country, and our guy doesn't even get 100 days to attempt to fix it? Sorry for the political rant, I just felt it had to be said.

I love how funny this movie was. It totally came out of nowhere when the killer yelled,"This is for F%$KING Ben Affleck!", and then pushed the mistress chick in front of the train. The Insider has nothing on State of Play.

Funny review except for the political nonsense injected by Carlyle. You guys usually stay out of politics on these reviews, and that's one of the main reasons I like this site so much, but his comments about Republicans was far from being neutral or objective. I don't care what side is attacked, I just don't want to see this crap on here, as I have to deal with that stuff daily. So please, in the future, refrain from such remarks.

By the way, Dan85, who says one can't think Republicans are d**chebags and still not like Obama? They are separate from one another. Anyhow, enough political talk.

It costs too much money for Hollywood to base any film on ANYTHING original. The film has to have a track record SOMEWHERE that it will draw an audience, or the film doesn't go through. It could be a novel, graphic novel, miniseries, TV show, or old cartoon. It could also be a sequel. BUT, it HAS to have a track record of some sort. I believe the likes of Pixar, Dreamworks, and so on, are the only ones who can get away with doing something completely new.

Carlyle you say republicans are douchebags, but we didn't vote Osama into the White House. When he fucks up, i'm gonna laugh at you so hard. Nice review by the way from Korey & Leon.
