Good reboot, but feels unnecessary. This new film doesn't give me enough to completely move past the original trilogy, I still would have prefered a Spiderman 4 than a reboot so soon. Strong cast, ok script overall, good action, great performances by Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, a good new tone, and good character development for Spiderman and Gwen Stacy.

But, the design and writing of the Lizard character was terrible. Although Im glad they started with something different instead of Doc Ock or Goblin again, they failed to make a good villain to start this new series. I like the Lizard CHARACTER, and Rhys Ifans did a good job, but the character was made WAY to cliche, with an outrageously predictable and unoriginal plot. And I know they left things unresolved for the sequels, but don't market the god damn movie as "The untold story" and "Spidermans greatest secrets will be revealed" if you don't give us SHIT! Overall, just a matinee.

    Spiderman: Full Price

    Spiderman 2: Better than sex

    Spideran 3: Matinee

    Amazing Siderman: Matinee

Raimi was my 'generations' Spiderman, so I found this new one a bit lacking and off putting.  Not a bad effort from a studio just trying to hold onto the rights, and I'd watch a sequel, especially if they could put a little more heart in it, but I love the video review of the movie when they back Korey into a corner.

I'm glad to say that I enjoyed watching The Amazing Spider-Man more on DVD than I did in the movie theater in July.

Andrew Garfield is a likeable Peter Parker and the clues to the story are left unsolved for a reason.

I now give the movie a Full Price!!

To be perfectly honest, I thought this was better than both the first and last Raimi Spider-Man films.

P.S The movie was enjoyable enough to watch in the theater. When Peter wasn't stereotype rebellious teen I liked him. I liked Uncle Ben's character, Aunt May's character seemed like she was just there to fill space.

This Spider-Man looks like Batman mixed with Captain America. The relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey is more enjoyable then the obsessive daddy issues relations with Mary Jane. In this one Gwen Stacey's excited about knowing Peter's powers and continue on her life when she needs to. In the other movies it's about Mary Jane never being satisfied by the attention she gets and has disregard towards Peter's responsibility as Spider-Man. In one of the movies she becomes upset Peter didn't see her performance sort of like a little girl who dresses in fairy costume, sways side to side, and sings a song were she doesn't know the words nor notes of the song in front of her daddy; and the dad says, "That was really great honey let's sing some more" then the dad begins singing terribly with her. The skate boarding scene is completely unnecessary. The Lizard looks like a goomba. I just realized that this movie is also a mixture of Good Will Hunting; except being with Robin Williams he ends up with the other guy. Robin Williams is Uncle Ben and the other guy is Dr Connors. The spider getting on Peter seems more thought out in this movie then spiders getting out of container in the other movie. They don't even explain how it got out. I wouldn't be surprised it there was a scene the got cut that involved two black women in why the spider got out. The pacing seemed slow, all the way until the end, with a fight scene in the high school to take a break from the slow pacing. I don't like either emo Peter nor rebellious teen Peter. I don't know what it's like having my arm cut off but the movie seemed like it was shoving the fact Dr Connors arm was cut off and he was upset about it. If they went any further every scene with Dr Connors would be him screaming, "Whhhy!?! Why did my arm have to be cut off!?! My arm being cut off causes me great despair! I miss having two hands! Whhhy!?! Whhhy!?! Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy!?!"

Who thought The Lizard looks like a goomba from the Mario Bros movie?

I'm going to have to disagree with the crew on this one. Overall, I found I prefer it to the Raimi Films. Andrew Garfeild makes for a perfect peter and a perfect Spider-Man, he is immensely relateable and his emotions seem real.  So many moments where I Nerd-gasmd, like when he answers a call from aunt may while keeping his mask on, his confrontation with the car theif, the lizard school scene, the device he uses to lock his door, every pov/swinging with Spidey shot, the new scenes where he discovers his powers, him chillin on a web in the sewers, and all the cool spidey poses he does and the way he moves.

The rest of the cast does a stand-up job as well (Martin Sheen made for a better Uncle Ben who felt more important here). I thought that everything the first spider-man did The Amazing Spider-man does as well, but better. I love how this film chose to stay closer to the comics, and I walked out feeling closer to Peter. The Amazing Spider-Man is a darker, more mature, and different Super-hero film. It was an origin story in the purest sense of the word, and I loved how it dug down into Parker's depths to examine what made him him, also loved the high school setting. I felt that Rhys Ifans did a great job as Curt Connors, although the Lizard wasn't as great. Still a good villain (certainly better than venom and Sandman in Spidey 3), just Dr. Connors was a better character and was overall more interesting.

Also, the film was slow at points, and not much Spidey action although this never really bothered me all that much (the Spidey parts we do get are GREAT!). So yes, I felt that The Amazing Spider-Man was a great success. I prefer it to the other Spidey films, and I like how it was more true to the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man and to the comics overall. I'd say that yes, the film is not without it's faults but it's still the perfect Spidey film. I'd actually go so far as to say that this was my favorite film of the Summer (yes, I thought this was better than The Dark knight Rises).

Out of 10 Stars I'd give it 9. Out of 5 Stars I'd give it 4.

I really disagree with Spill here because I thought that although it did tread on similar ground to the first Raimi film, it did improve on them a hell of a lot. The story is not as heavy and I think it has a lot more of the fun factor but also has a level of emotion and darkness. I think visually it's very striking and stylish with some pretty good action I thought. The CGI especially was better than all the Raimi films although the Lizard wasn't the best villain. I'd happily give this a Full Price and look forward to another Spidey film like this.

Don't worry Korey, I'm with you 100% on this.  I too am pretty much the only one in my immediate circle that thoroughly enjoyed this and felt it was a true depiction of the spider-man I grew up with.

Just saw this yesterday, honestly thought it was just okay, I had a few problems with it at first. Then the more I thought about it, the more i found myself disliking it. It made me realize how much I like the Sam Raimi Movies more than I did watching this one. I just hope they make the Peter Parker character more likable in the next movie than how they set him up in this movie.

I think this movie was good, not an instant classic, but the sequels to follow might just put it in that catergory. Korey has it right that it was definitely rebooted to soon, however if you are 10yr old having your first experience of Spidey, this would a great way to introduce the character.

I like the smart-ass Spidey (slightly asshole-like), reminded me of the cartoon version throwing verbal daggers at Shocker or Kingpin.

Looking forward to part two, and not to be morbid, Gwen should die off early.

Great review! My personal nitpick would be the score of the movie. Something about it felt a little off at times. It messed with the flow. But other than that, I liked it a lot! I hope they have a clear vision for the sequels and take even more time to polish them.

Just came back from this. Second best Spider-man movie (after Spider-man 2). I really do think it's BS to say Sam Raimi's Peter Parker/Spider-man was more like the comics or that this one is more EMO. I think people hating on it are mostly against the fact that it's rebooting.

@Damion E. Smith - So how does that explain the large majority of comic book fans who loved it (myself included)? Just because this wasn't Cyrus, Leon, or Co-Host's idea of a great Spidey film doesn't mean it wasn't a great Spidey film. Just not their cup o' tea. At almost $400mil worldwide, anywhere from 70-80% approval across multiple sites, and the massive amount of buzz surrounding it, we'll all get another chance to decide if this film was worth it when they make the sequel (and there's little chance of them not making a sequel at this point).

This is why we know Korey is not a comic book fan ;)

I'm reading a lot of comments on this review and from what I can see people don't remember (or were never told) that THIS IS THE ORIGINAL STORY!! The comic books started off just like he was played in this movie. Gwen was the original girl, not Mary Jane. Peter always made his own web-shooters, they did NOT come from holes in his wrists. I'm also glad that they put WAY more emphasis on Doctor Connors this time. Overall an amazing movie. On another note, I don't know the entire story but from the rumors I hear, when they make an Avengers 2, THIS Spider-Man (the REAL one) will be in it. I can't wait to find out!

    @darlinho

U gotta agree old format was casual convo.. now its 20 seconds go, now breathe. other is flat more enjoyable.. 5 min cutdown were perfect for me.. and i said time/desire.. so yes i find the time to jerk it online, because i have that desire(Nate Dogg style: Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahee!!).. ive listened to their audio, but half hour and longer movie reviews are usless. might miss showtime by the time its done.. i do listen to thier other stuff now and then.. but half hour movie reviews? come on! Jerkin it is way better than that. None of this makes me an idiot. or even young for that matter.. belive it or not, I even get some poon pretty often.

Great review and after seeing the movie I think it was really good and I don't understand at all why no one enjoys it as much as Korey did.
