I enjoyed the tension at first but after the 1 hour mark it just dragged, I mean I am willing to go through a movie like these for a short while but it gets old really fast, and also, Clooney really does alot of stuff that would get an assassin killed. He sits right in front of a big window, totally visible for any kind of Sniper to take him out and he buys sex from hooker which is like the oldest distraction in the book from having your attention of being on the alert... I give this a low Rental. I gotta give this movie some credit after all since those scenes where it's all tense are still very effective and that's what makes the movie.

Finally got to see it last night and was heavily surprised at how much my girlfriend and I enjoyed it. I knew what I was going into to see, while she had no clue and throughout the film we were sitting there on the edge of our seats watching Clooney intently. Sure much of the cliches were there for a typical spy/thriller but acting wise, this is one of the best. Full price.

Look, I'm all about the Thinking Person's Drama and don't need something to Go Boom every 90 seconds to keep me bouncing in my seat and clapping my hands like a trained seal, but where something like Michael Clayton gave me a handful of brilliantly-realized characters to care about while the tension grew and grew (and grew. And grew...) over the course of the film, The American just didn't give me anything to care about. And I'm sorry, but Clooney's character in this film has to be the dumbest-ass assassin I've ever fucking seen. Go watch how John Cusack's Martin Blank behaves in Gross Pointe Blank the greatest Assassin Film ever made. THAT'S how an assassin behaves in big, open, public places. Go back and watch The American again and tell me how many fucking times Clooney sits in front of a big, well-lit plate-glass window, or has his back to the door. Unless the filmmakers are trying to subtly tell us that his character just doesn't care anymore and WANTS to get a cap in his ass, then Clooney's assassin failed Basic Assassin Academy on day one. That, alone, made me angry. I kept saying, "Why are you sitting in that big lit-up window, you fucking dumbass? Someone's going to SHOOT YOU!" Someone else may have said this by now (I haven't read all the commentary yet), but who was Assassin Lady's ORIGINAL target? The one she was contracting the rifle for in the first place? After all this Mechanic Bullshit set-up, I wanted to see a proper hit go down, if only to get some payoff from the hour-plus of Gun Fetishism required to drive that narrative. I thought maybe it was going to be the priest, who was the only character I had any real emotional connection to, but I was denied even that sad moment. So yeah, I have to give this Some Ol' Bullshit, if only because Clooney's assassin doesn't know better than to sit in a big bright window drinking Italian coffee while waiting for his hot Italian hooker.

Went and watched this the other day and took a little time to think it over before i posted. My initial impression has held though, this movie is Some Ol' BS. When the action sequence of your movie is a low speed chase you need to rethink a few things. I mean a scooter chasing a euro compact though the deserted streets of backwater Italy, and thats the highlight? You know what's worse than a movie full of tense moments followed by jump scares? A movie full of tense moments and......nothing. The movie has a couple very nice tension moments but to be a 'tense thriller' you have to have THRILLER! How in a movie with all of 8 characters most of who have about three lines do you fail to develop any character? Its a little less entertaining than watching the news "car crash, wild fire, dead guy. Eh whats on another channel." if your thinking about seeing it make sure you've seen anything else thats sparked your interest first. You're not missing anything here, in my opinion. But i didnt really care for Up in the Air either so if that was your thing, maybe this is too.

This Is Some Ol' BULLSHIT!!! And anybody who's seen the movie and isn't being paid under the table to say otherwise KNOWS it. Clooney has what? 68 words of dialogue in the whole movie? He's a highly paid assassin...they're highly paid, right?....and he falls in LOVE with a whore? Is it just me or did that town seem a little too small to have a brothel? Never thought a movie could do this but it made me HATE scenery. Reams and reams of what had to be the ugliest countryside anybody could find in Italy. That took skill. Boring has been used. How bout...like watching paint dry? If George had STARTED his career with a piece of shit like this we'd never have heard of or from him again. So? How much did they pay YOU guys to give it a Matinee rating?

This is a terrible movie. Basically 70% is him in a car, 20% him building a gun, 4% sex scene, and 6% action. I agree with a rental.

This is Basically James Bond without the Gadgets, Explosions, and Fast Paced Elements. Its Very good in a Tense Thriller. But if your not into that type of Film this isn't For you.

George Clooney, as an actor, is a little too "new wave" for my tastes.

one of the worst movies i've ever seen. there was no character development, and therefore no reason to care for the characters. the entire movie was george clooney walking through streets that always seem to be empty when there is a gunfight. the only redeeming factor was the wide shots of italy. this is a f*ck you movie.

My mom said she was waiting for a plot to happen. For once, I agree completely with her. Beautiful cinematography, but apart from that, nothing to take out of it. I give it a moderate rental.

this wasnt for me i agree with korey if it was acting as a character study i think that there should have been more work on that angle instead of just george clooney hiding out in some european town on vacation low rental for e but some ppl will like it

I'm gonna give it a Full Price even though this movie will not be for everyone. And I'm wondering the same thing, too. When is Co-Host going to get his own rating card? The only one I see him get is for Better than Sex ratings but they are the same as everyone else's.

I absolutely loved it including the ending. I just felt that it had this really amazing 70's European style and sensibility, was beautifully shot and I felt the pace and emotional barriers were their for a reason. Reminded me so much of Jean-Pierre Melville's "Le Samourai". It definitely isn't for everyone, and the trailer certainly was deceiving but I have been following this since it was first announced so I knew what I was in for. Either way great review!
