I really don't understand the complaint of the chainsaw just sitting there and being fan service. It comes back into play at the end of the movie!

Kind of off topic but not really being that it is kind of a cabin in the woods type movie. Did anyone else kind of like The Breed (2006) I know its pretty much a shitty movie but I remember kind of liking it. I also remember it having one of Michelle Rodriguez best performances.

    SPOILER ALERT!!!

It's a somewhat damning commentary on the worth of human life that the grisly murder of four human beings isn't sufficient to establish dramatic tension, so much so that the writers felt the need to basically steal the plot of Constantine for the second and third act.  Really, the body-counting-as-apocalyptic-checklist cliché needs to be put out of its misery.  The re-appropriation of the mythology, from Sumerian to some sort of Supernatural-esque quasi-witchcraft, causes an incredible dearth in the overall tone of the film.  Demon possession is demon possession, and in the post-Paranormal Activity world of cinema, it's practically devoid of any impact on it's own; one can only assume that the pronounced profanity and self-mutilation tropes were attempts to squeeze the final drops of blood from the proverbial turnip.  What made the original fascinating was the Lovecraftian touch of grounding the mythology in a dead culture which is most theoretical to dedicated scholars and utterly alien to the average person.  The inscrutable nature of the creatures' motivations heightened the tension, as you never knew what was likely to happen or why.  None of that could be found in this film, just a succession of Captain Howdy knock-offs that still think people are going to be shocked by veiled lesbianism or using "c*nt" on-screen.

The hardest part to swallow was the grrrl-power ending, not simply because making a girl the new "Ash" was a shameless last-ditch attempt to win over the female audience, most of whom didn't want to be there in the first place, but also because an 85-pound, formerly-possessed, buried-then-defibrillated-with-a-car-battery junkie still in the throes of withdrawal and bleeding profusely from the stump of a severed hand is an unlikely savior for the world.  Just sayin'.

Saw it today, sorry, it was an ok movie but all that hype made this movie sound like the best horror remake out there. It has more blood and shocking moments but other than that nothing special and not that scary. By the way, the cameo at the end it was just to please fan boys. Its a high rental.

How were the characters supposed to know the book is called the Necronomicon? Remember in Evil Dead 1 and 2 Ash and crew had the professor's voice on tape to explain what said book contained.

Enjoyed the review, guys. I was mostly disappointed in the film, though. I'd say it's worth a rental, but that's about it. It's devoid of scary/creepy moments, and doesn't have any of the campy humor that made Evil Dead 2 (and even to some extent the first one) work. It just made me want to go home and watch Bruce Campbell kick some ass in the original movies. To give it some credit, the gore effects were great as many have said, and I did love the final scene.

Probably my favorite video review of the new format. Great work from the animation team. Love the Pee-wee's reference Co-Host.

Great review guys.  The only issue that I see here is that people tend not to see that this is a remake of the first Evil Dead. We have to remember that the second Evil Dead (II) is not a continuation of the first, but in all is a remake of the first one.

So in reality, the new Evil Dead is the third remake of the original. I am not kidding, go look it up. In the first one Ash dies in the end ( and he is an ashole of a character)  Bruce campbell is so charismatic that he turns the character around. He was so good at it that Evil Dead II, and mainly, Army of Darkness made sure they used all of his Groovyness.

With that said I think people expected Evil Dead II or Army, when in actuality this is just Evil Dead. If you catch my drift.

I loved the fuck out of it and give it a better then sex. best horror remake in a long ass time. You can tell everyone involved in it had they're hearts in the right place and this wasn't just some quick cash grab.

Awesome video.  I wish the NecroComicCon was a real horror comic book convention.  Hopefully now that it's been said a few times, someone will make it an actual event.

After watching the original Evil Dead last night, I have to correct Korey's comment against the chainsaw "just sitting there" in the remake.  The chainsaw wasn't really utilized in the original either.  Ash tied Linda down and considered using it to dismember her, but he changes his mind and throws it aside.  That's it.  Because Evil Dead 2 is the amped up remake of the original, we tend to remember that more and kinda confuse the two in our memories (I know I did).  So yeah, honest mistake.

Off to see this remake later tonight!

I actually liked this video review. A bit of something new from each mixed with clips from the audio review. It feels natural. Before it felt like it was just lines being read off paper.
