I not seen this remake of the thing but would be willing to give it a watch looks like a decent remake prequel and nobody, can expect it to be as good as the original in terms of acting but there some positives in there!

@Gareth Grimsrud it's a reference to the original. MacReady kept referencing to the Norwegians as Swedes

I'm a BIG fan of the JC flick and "matinee" is about right for this one.

My wife and I had a good time with this flick, I was amazed by the attention-to-detail they had for JC's flick to the point where after the movie I had to show my wife the original scene with the burnt out swede camp.

One of the key points for me was after the movie she mentioned how she kept thinking during the movie "KILL IT WITH FIRE!" but didn't realize it was an old meme when I asked her.

Different cast, little bit more story added, but otherwise, vaguely the same film as the one by John Carpenter. A remake of a remake, seems a little off, but whatever. It wasnt to bad.

I didn't hate this movie but I didn't care for it either. All I keep thing about is how good John Carpenter version is so much than this and even the original.

Didn't expect much from this movie, and was afraid it would hurt the original for me, but actually it didn't. It had a few pretty cool moments i thought and i admit i liked the way they took it. Great review.

and ill atleast say...there were scenes towards the end that were cool. and I mean around the time they are testing eachother, and you see the distrust in eachother. and...that guy who rocked that huge red Galifianakis beard seemed HE had better acting than ANYONE here.

I usually like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, but didn't think she was great at all in this. Joel Edgerton has been good lately, but totally misused. and that scientist just acted too evil to even give a fuck about anyone at that point...so really you sit around knowing everyone will die but by the time its over, you realize you could have been watching John Carpenter's version that entire time.

I have a feeling Co-Host will end up liking some things about it, but sorry, the ending of this video review alone was better than the entire movie I saw yesterday. Total waste of my time and money (imo).

    and THANK YOU Mudguts...

that is exactly how I imagined the cast & crew feeling after watching this piece of crap.

I know thats how I sure felt.

    I'll sum it up...

"ok cool opening scene, featuring some of the music too and the frigid landscape..nice..ok cool we get to see a ship of some kind...aww here's the title with that music niiiiice".

    then...

"WTF are you stupid? Ok well these people suck cause I don't know any of them besides when they said their names which I forgot within a minute due to lack of interest...I hope this doesn't turn into more of  a slasher movie that would suck.....OH DAMN it did...will this movie get any better by the end? There's another 30min or so, it's possible." (30 min later)...."WOW what a piece of shit!!!"...."oh wait something during the credits?"............"OK so the ONLY decent part of the movie was during the fucking credits?? are you kidding me? I had to wait until the credits to see something mildly interesting? FUCK THIS MOVIE."

Saw this last night - well shot, performances were pretty good (on par with Carpenter's film at least), I could watch M.E.W. read the phone book for an hour and be happy, the CG wasn't NEARLY as offensive as I thought it would be, the sound design was excellent, the jump scares were plentiful but well done (only one real "fake out" scare), and despite one reeeeeally obvious plot turn it managed to take the property in it's own direction while staying around the things that people liked from the last one. I'd go a bit higher than the guys and verge into "low full price".

And yeah, if you've never seen the Carpenter film, the credits sting won't make sense. There were a couple people in the theater that left scratching their heads.

Hey guys... just curious - why are your laughs so fake? You can not make me believe those laughs are your natural laughs. It sounds very, very fake.

The fillings scene is like .. Really guys? You don't believe me? After all we've just seen?" That always pisses me off in Monster / slasher movies.

Personally I loved this movie as soon as I could stop comparing it to the '82 John Carpenter version. The movie isn't perfect but its a damn good film. I don't disagree with your criticisms, except I think it makes perfect sense that it is so much more aggressive in this movie. In this film the alien figured that we didn't pose that much of a threat to it and didn't fear us and because it was so aggressive it got burned. In the John Carpenter version when it reawakens it is much more cautious to avoid getting a flamethrower in the face this time.

Watched it and loved it!  I liked tha fact that it was more action.  The tech is here so that we can have these monsters running around everywhere and why re make the original movie when you can add to it.  This is a really good prequal for those that are fans of the original.
