best western i've seen in awhile.they don't seem to make that many true westerns anymore.

Did start a little slow at the very beginning, but it just built up from there. Let me do my list:

    Pros:

-Solid acting from all the leads. Steinfeld sometimes seemed to be reading her lines very quickly, but she was always a commanding presence. The interaction between her, Bridges and Damon was the heart of the film.

-Solid direction. The Coens know how to maintain suspense and keep it flowing naturally with none of those tricks we hate from other directors.

-Great writing. Snappy and intelligent dialogue throughout makes this a joy to listen to. Proves that cowboys can say clever things, even when drunk!

-Stellar production value. The cinematography, costumes, art direction/location shooting and more were professionally well done.

-Being a great adaptation (technically not a "remake" as it is based on the source material and not the movie). The film managed to create a distinct identity for itself without feeling like the John Wayne version.

    Cons:

-Some weak editing here and there. Mostly little things, but it sometimes makes the flow a bit strained.

-That end credit song. Not that it was all bad, but it was so jarring when following the events before it.

A great film all in all. Definitely ***1/2 out of ****

Dissapointing especially when you compare it to the original. The original True Grit was a good old fashioned fun western. The Coen Bros. seemed to be going more for the "Unforgiven" style of western and that just didn't work for me here. I do think it's worth seeing mainly for the performance of Hallie Steinfeld, who out-acts everybody else in the movie.

I saw this movie and I enjoyed it alot.I saw the original and that bored me.This remake is epic.I will be giving this movie a full price. The lesson learned is "If you kill a girl's father.Expect her to come after you with the law enforcement."

Thanks for the info, FungusMonkey.  I did see him in those, but I also admit that I've not listened to too many of them myself.  Heh, if I did, I'd probably find out why he's only on those.

As for the contest, I guess I missed out...oh well, still all cool.

    @DMajorBoss - He's only on ACOCO now.

@Korey - you might want to make it clear to people that they have to post that they found images in the blog post, not on the contest post. Two different people have said that they found your image here, but they posted it on that page not this one.

This probably shows just how infrequent my visits to the forum have been, but I do wonder what happened to Carlyle.  I've not seen him in quite a while, in the sense of reviews.  It'd be nice to have him back.

Nice review. I really liked the movie but I don't think I'm in love with it as much as some other people. I definitely liked it more that Korey seemed to though. I love how you brought Carlyle in the review though. It surprised me the first time i saw him.

The Grits jokes and Hamburglar had me rolling. I MIGHT give this is a shot, but if KOREY calls it slow, idk, my parents might kick me for renting it.
