This movie looks like it's gonna be shit

Alright, will the lot of you calm down and either take the film for what it's worth--which is a lot more than the shitty B and C-grade knockoffs--or read the goddamn book?

The whole movie should of been CGI or traditional animation. All the alienfest we see would be more "believable" and it's a Disney film; animation it's their niche. It woulda help separated them from Star Wars and Pandora-shit.

So I guess according to Cyrus Avatar was the most original movie ever.

@ Jennifer: Because the stuff he wears in the book would be just a LITTLE beyond the pale for a Disney movie.

Liked it a lot but the 3D was pointless.

Just saw it 30mins ago I do not know why it was 3D as it was pointless no use of the 3D AT ALL!!!! Apart from that it was one of the worst movies I have seen recently. This was a FUCK YOU for me I wanted to walk out 4 times ... it made me mad and bored.

I thought it was Prince of Persia on Mars, and only Jake Gylenhaal had the charisma to make that thing bearable.

Superman was inspired by John Carter he even predates all the classic Sci-Fi  Hero's like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. If anything you owe John Carter as the forerunner of modern Science Fiction.

The problem with this is that it's soo visually dull. I don't want a realistic Mars. I want blood red skies, crimson lands and rich saturated color. Avatar and, yes, even the SW prequels were beautiful to look at. But everything about John Carter is fucking generic in every way including the lead actors who are bland as fuck. They couldn't have even went with a cool title like The Princess of Mars and picked "John Carter" for fuck sakes.

It's too bad that Paul Verhoven hadn't of Directed this and cast Kelly Brook as the princess and had her constantly naked. I'd throw my wallet at the screen for that movie.

John Carter's famous look was created by Frank Frazetta.

I don't think think movie will be terrible but I do think it will be a bellow average science fiction film. It would have to get really good reviews for me to become even remotely interested in seeing this movie.

    @Fungusmonkey

Yeah, I wish that they would follow the influence of films that were financially successful and well-received as opposed to following the influence of films that have only been successful at cashing in on a name.  In fact, that's the main reason why it's such a poor marketing move in my opinion; yes, the prequels made a lot of money, but they are part of a film franchise that has been revered for decades.  Unfortunately, the fact that the prequels are the herpes of the Star Wars universe is of no consequence when it comes to a business standpoint; the films will make money regardless of their quality.  John Carter does not have that advantage working for it.

I am of the opinion that if the film bombs, the marketing will primarily be to blame.

I saw this last weekend at a free screening and the fact that is was free was the only reason I went because the trailers didn't interest me at all.  The trailer doesn't really do the movie justice.  It does have some problems, the biggest one being (perhaps it was just me) is that  I couldn't understand what the bald guys were really planning and why,.  It didn't make sense to me.  Still the effects were pretty good, I liked the characters, it was exciting and funny and overall I enjoyed it.

The screening was in 3D and the 3D is pointless.  It brings nothing to the movie.

The first trailer had me pretty excited. The second had me really worried.
The third felt like a warning from the editor that no one at Disney could see how terrible of a trailer it was.
For the sake of that first trailer, I really do hope this is pulp done right and not the combined effort of a bunch of executives who don't know how to make movies.
