Podcasts - THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 8, Issue 6: Standing Up

The League presents the first of a series of something different from the norm as we present our sit down interviews with some pretty big name comics who are making their way through our town for the Moontower Comedy Festival. This week you get us talking to Tom Rhodes and Brody Stevens, two experienced comics who've got lots of good stories for your listening entertainment (and you might even get some learnin' in to boot). Check it..

I love all LEOGs, but I have something to critique about this episode and that's Brody. I don't mind there being a serious conversation, but he didn't seem to really tie it in with any jokes, just seemed like it was one big downer.

Haven't listened yet and am dreading getting to this episode.  Brody Stevens hosted an episode of one of my other favorite podcasts and he was incredibly annoying.  I know Cyrus listens to that particular podcast occasionally, but he may have missed that episode.  Maybe he'll be better in an interview format with someone to keep him on track, but I'm going to come in with very low expectations on this episode.

Let me be fair and say something nice about Mr. Steven Brody Stevens.  He has a very impressive fastball.

I'm really not a big fan of these interview style podcasts.  Sure, I love the Joe Lansdale episodes and when they have guests and stuff but i WAY prefer the other style.  Just getting some friends in a room and talking about movies, comics, tv and news.  I almost always skip the interview podcasts Nerdist puts up and only listen to the Hostfuls, so it's not just a LEOG thing.

Meh, hopefully you guys will go back to the other formula.  What would be really great, though, is if these interviews were put up in addition to a full LEOG, like as a separate thing.

I didn't think it was boring, but Brody was very depressing.

LEOG is an amazing podcast, but yeah. Booooooooooring.

But I am still going to try to finish this one little by little. I hope it gets better.

@IAmDeadpool Yea, I couldn't finish this episode & I'm an avid listener. I thought the free format was going to be awesome because it worked so well when they did it once every blue moon, but now...I think I miss the old format with everyone from start to finish. I also miss hearing Cyrus's news in the beginning because it seems like it takes forever to get to now. And I agree, the first guest did ramble (in an unfunny way). But oh well. I look forward to next Friday.

cyrus, besides the music; i'm not feeling this new format. This leog wasn't terribly interesting, the guests tended to ramble, and it wasn't a funny ramble.

ps. my picture was in no way referring to the podcast. it was just a funny picture i found.   This podcast was awesome. wish it had been a separate segment on its own almost

As a long time listener of Leog I'm gonna voice my honest opinion. This particular episode was kinda boring for me. Don't get me wrong the interviews were well done but I guess they weren't as funny as I thought they were going to be. Again I think the episode was well done but could have been funnier. I loved the parts with Cyrus and Leon just shooting the shit however.

    Moonlight towers in Austin, Texas

    Moonlight Towers
    A moonlight tower at night
    Location: Austin and vicinity
    Nearest city: Austin, Texas
    Architect: Fort Wayne Electric Co.
    NRHP Reference#: 76002071
Added to NRHP: July 12, 1976

Austin, Texas is the only city in the world known to still operate a system. The towers are 165 feet (50 m) tall and have a 15 feet (4.6 m) foundation. This type of tower was manufactured in Indiana by Fort Wayne Electric Company and assembled onsite.[1] In 1894, the City of Austin purchased 31 used lighting towers from Detroit. A single tower cast light from six carbon arc lamps, illuminating a 1,500 feet (460 m) radius circle brightly enough to read a watch.[2]

The Austin Moonlight Towers were erected, at least partially, in response to the actions of the Servant Girl Annihilator. This claim has been repudiated by some since the towers were erected in 1894 and 1895, ten years after the murders took place.[3]

When first installed, the towers were connected to their own electric generators at the Austin dam (on the site of present day Tom Miller Dam). Over the years they were switched from their original carbon-arc lamps (which were exceedingly bright and time consuming to maintain) to incandescent lamps in the 1920s, and mercury vapor lamps in the 1930s. Mercury vapor lighting allowed the installation of a switch at each tower's base. During World War II, a central switch was installed, allowing citywide blackouts in case of air raids.

1970 saw the towers officially recognized as Texas State Landmarks. This was followed by the 17 remaining towers being listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 12, 1976. At this time, only 6 are in their original locations as established by the Board of Public Works and City Council in 1895. Additional designation was given them as State Archeological Landmarks in 1986.

In 1993 the city of Austin dismantled the towers and restored every bolt, turnbuckle and guy-wire as part of a $1.3 million project, the completion of which was celebrated in 1995 with a city-wide festival.

One of the towers was prominently featured in the 1993 film Dazed and Confused as the site of a high-school keg party, in which the character played by Matthew McConaughey exclaims, "Party at the moon tower."

The City of Austin has ordinances in place to protect the towers from demolition; however, since 2004 two of the remaining 17 towers have been taken down from their locations. The towers at 4th & Nueces and 1st & Trinity have been removed due to new construction. It is unclear whether the towers will be replaced, or erected elsewhere.

Great show (especially the last part).

I too have felt with depression because of medicine I was taking. They were the worst days of my life. About a week were I didn't want to do anything but stay in bed because I was afraid I would drag germs to another part of the house. Thank the Lord (and my doctor), that my parent were there to support me.
