Uh Oh it seems as if my post sparked some conversation about My Little Pony. I just wanna say thanks to Full Time Anthropologist for not being an asshole about the subject. It seems all to easy to hear the title then just chalk it up to a bunch of grown men like a Little girls show. I am a child of the 90's and I grew up with the Powerpuff Girls and I didn't mind a trio of superhero girls kicking ass against Mojojojo or HIM! Maybe it's cause their pony's maybe if they were horses it'd be less "girly". I don't let the color of pink, rainbows, or pony's keep me a way from a funny show. That's what it is to me a show I get a lot of laughs out of, same as Adventure Time or Regular Show. My first post was just saying their is a reason MLP has such a huge following. I'd love for Cyrus to be able to watch the Brony documentary whenever it comes out on Remote Viewing and hear his opinions then. Luckily the documentary  already got it's budget from Kickstarter http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/257527888/bronycon-the-documentary?ref=live It might be enlightening for some of you out there!

I think it's less offensive than Obsidian who (I'm generalizing as I'm not very familiar with comics) mentally ill and part demon or something. I'm not offended by Obsidian, in fact he seemed kind interesting, but people can take anything the wrong way.  But I agree it would have been interesting with an ethnic character, or one that people actually knew about. It's kinda weird choosing Alan Scott since he's more known to an older crowd and what's the point of retconning an old school character like that, you can't even say he's a late in life type of guy since he's young now. All in all, while encouraging, could've have been better, but could've been worse I guess...

There are a lot of problems with "revealing" that J'onn's gay. To start with, it takes away from the impact; he's a goddamn space alien shape changer, gender's just an illusion to him, so no shit he's gay, straight and everything in between.

The other is the SEVERELY unfortunate subtext that would come with it: "being gay means you're less human than everyone else."

As far as such things go, picking a character whose powers are external - a power ring, in this case - helps negate the idea that he's not straight because whatever gave him his powers also "messed up" his sexual identity.

I do wish they'd chosen an Earth-1 character (since Earth-2 "doesn't count" in the eyes of most readers) personally. Retconning Kyle Rayner or Guy Gardner would've been interesting. Static and Blue Beetle would also have added some interesting story potential as well because then not only are you talking about a gay superhero but also the issues that come with being gay in an ethnic groups that have profound antipathy towards homosexuals.

I'd actually think it'd be cool if the J'on J'onnz turned out to be gay, sincerely. But that thought went away the moment I remembered what was his "title". (I grew up watching Justice League and they almost never used his moniker) I wonder if that was actually a consideration that they scrapped because of the name. Because logically he's prominent enough to make an impact and yet not as crucial as to where you'd get weirdos claiming they're raping their childhoods or whatever. On a not so serious note it would be amazing if they did a David Bowie cameo where they were secret lovers and he inspired Ziggy Stardust.

The key difference Dubya is what Leon was saying about Alan Scott and comics in general. We've stopped trying to create anything fresh for some time now. It's recycled or reformatted at 5-6 times the price to where it's out priced fan base and created a class warfare between consumers... There is NEVER a time I walk out of comic book store spending less than $70 PER week with 20% discount with the SAME number of titles and SAME quality of writing as I did in my youth when I spent no more than $10-15 a week on titles... THAT's what has people talking about the good ol'days because as you get older and have kids... Your spending on disposable income as you start looking towards retirement becomes THAT much more real.

Awww... we've offended the Bronies. We're heartbroken. It'll never happen again. Promise.

(by the way, My Little Pony is a terrible show.)

    Ok, never again AFTER that.

Hey cyrus I have a suggestion for what you could call your new home. What about Castle Blog, like Castle Black from game of thrones. Because you’re defending the league from far away against the wildlings on the other side of the not Austin part of Texas. Whilst also putting funny stuff on the internets

Cyrus THANK YOU for saying what I'm always trying to tell folks about "Oh everything was soooo much better back then and everything today sucks wah wah cry cry blah blah!"

There was just as much stupid commercialized processed bullshit "back then" as there is now. Likewise there's still plenty of great movies/TV shows/music/etc. today just like there was however long ago. The main difference is that you're now old enough to have that filter turned on and go "Oh, I now notice this kind of sucks" rather than to just take it at the carefree face value as you did as a kid. And I can't stand people that use nostalgia as an excuse to act like cynical elitist pricks.

There's that great quote from Midnight In Paris that I love and pretty much says it all: "Nostalgia is denial - denial of the painful present... the name for this denial is golden age thinking - the erroneous notion that a different time period is better than the one ones living in - its a flaw in the romantic imagination of those people who find it difficult to cope with the present."

Like they were talking about even with relationships at the beginning, you just gotta take the good AND the bad, not just cherrypick the good to make yourself feel better than everyone else. Times change, iconography changes, and your perspective changes. And that's about the end of it. You don't have to like it, but if you could please refrain from acting like a pompous whiny bitch about it, that'd be lovely.

I actually liked that they pronounced Aang's name correctly in the movie. That was the only thing I liked to be honest. I had some girl behind me literally 'correcting' the movie EVERY time they said his name. If you make a show based on another culture (or several), you do it properly. They have a calligraphy checker on the show who makes sure things are properly rendered, you're telling me it's too hard to pronounce a character's name the way it's meant to be? So I applaud M. Night for that. And I applaud the production designer's decision to make the arrows into actual symbols, I thought that was brilliant.

Loved lots of bits about the show. I never get tired hearing about Cat and Harris's wedding, I hope it lasts forever, as Leon and Cyrus talked about at the beginning. They have such good life lessons, which is why I'm liking their first part of the show. Lots of great things to bring up, and I might even watch some Once Upon a Time, but it's bizarre how so many things get awfully re-made. Honestly, I thought Beastly was the death nail, because I know people who hate that movie, but love Red Riding Hood. Hopefully things will become better overall.

I also do want to say, I'm love MLP, but I think Adventure Time is a superior show (Perhaps the best on TV). I know you guys in the LEOG don't enjoy it, so can you lay off of it? I mean, you guys know it has a reasonable fanbase, but this is probably the 3rd-4th time I've heard you guys go directly "FUCK THAT SHOW."

I enjoyed the show, but I could almost see the guys of LEOG doing their best not to interrupt the fair lady, Cat while she was explaining what Once Upon A Time is about.

And explaining.  And explaining.  And explaining some more.

Cat is well read, brimming with intelligence and I'm sure she makes the room prettier, but when she learns how to explain something in a clear, concise manner under ten minutes, she'll be doggone near perfect.

I'm shocked that you just lightly touched on the Jim Henson's storyteller series, I think the stories you were talked about was the Soldier and Death, and Fearnot, My Favorite out of the series was this the Luck Child, the Griffon just had me laughing for day.

@Isiah, But he wasn't talking about male parents, he was talking about middle aged men who like the show to a degree that is not normal. The show's not terrible, it's just meant for little girls. Yeah of course parents love it, because it's squeaky clean and harmless - so what. Parents do not determine the quality of a TV show.

Though to be fair I can see it as a guilty pleasure, however as the next big thing in animation? From someone who's been recently watching Adventure Time, Legend of Korra, Young Justice, and Thundercats? Doesn't even compare. But whatever, personal opinion and all.

  • June 04, 2012 at 5:54 AM, said ...

@Full Time Anthropologist No that's not why we love the show. We're fans of it because of it's kind-heartedness, it's wonderful characters and it's incredible animation and art designs. The show is not just for little girls, it's for little girls and their parents, Lauren Faust (The Show's creator) said so herself in fact here's what she said to someone who insulted us on deviantart:

"Honestly?? I feel that people who call them that are ignorant a-holes. That's how I feel. I didn't create this show for little girls, I created it for little girls and their parents — including male parents. It only stands to reason that adult animation fans without children may like it, too. The belief that boys shouldn't be interested in girl things is the main reason there's hardly anything decent for girls in animation — or almost any media, for that matter. It's a backwards, sexist, outdated attitude."

You are intitled to your own opinion but maybe you should do some reserch before you blast us.

P.S:I myself happen to enjoy Adventure Time and MLP equally, there both good shows there's no need to say one is better then the other.

I agree 100% with you Cyrus. In comparison, My Little Pony is nothing more but a simplistically blatant and over rated kid's show (really for little girls). Ultimately, My Little Pony is straightforwardly about relatively nothing more but friendship which is just awkward. Adventure Time is a testament of Cartoon Network doing their creative agendas correctly. It has done superbly what others fail at.

The only real reason to why some actually like My Little Pony is because (1) there is some creativity with its shiny and colorful creatures and (2) fans can actually help to give ideas on what should be done for potential future episodes. Adventure Time also uses creativity for their universe but much better and in very clever ways. Also, fans of Adventure Time may also give advice for possible future episodes such as the gender swap episodes with Fiona.

Also, there are very ominous aspects with the brony subculture. Not to mention and in no offense, but the whole brony thing is just socially awkward (even more so for adults).

I have no problems with full grown men idolizing the pony series (some of my friends are also bronies) and respect them as normal people, but Adventure Time is a true highly creative and incredibly made show that actually deserves its attention. In fact, to be frank or honest, I'm baffled that such an inspired and extraordinarily created series such as Adventure Time isn't getting more than twice the praise as My Little Pony. The only other animated series that delivers as Adventure Time right now (for its genre) is Avatar: The Legend of Korra. However, as humans, we do not all think alike.
