For the first time in a while, I find myself agreeing with Leon and Cyrus over Korey and Co-Host. After hearing some good word of mouth about The Collection, I thought I would go back and give the Collector a shot. Bare in mind, I have never, and will never, watch a Saw movie. So called 'Torture Porn' just isn't my thing, but I was convinced these leaned a little more towards traditional slasher film so I gave them a shot. The Collector was 'Okay', but still felt too rooted in the Saw style for my taste, the two bright spots being the Collector himself (who is a far better villain than Jigsaw), and Arkin, a Laurie or Nancy in male form who you couldn't help but root for just because he has a brain.

Still determined to see what all the hype was about, I gave The Collection a shot, and all I can say is wow. I actually really enjoyed this film, and while yes it does have 'silly' moments in it, I feel like I was able to actually over look the issues in terms of the greater narrative. It didn't take me long to understand the 'rules' of this world, and when they established them, they never really broke them. It is definitely the 'Aliens' to 'The Collector's 'Alien', leaning more towards action and suspense over 'horror'. The visuals were striking, the color tones bright and vibrant which is not what you expect from a film like this. Arkin returns and is just as cool, if not more so, than the original.

I simply don't agree with Co-Host's idea that making it 'supernatural' would some how make it better. The opposite, in fact, as the fact he wasn't an inhuman creature from hell is what made it more interesting, and made it feel more plausible that these people could, potentially, survive at the end. It makes him feel a lot like a cross between original Michael Myers (as in the first film), and Jigsaw. And why does there always have to be some super clear 'motive' or reasoning behind what a killer does? We're give a little insight into what might have quote 'Fucked him up' near the end, but personally that was all I needed. When did the Halloween franchise start taking a turn for the worse? Why, it was when Myers' family ties were explained. Interesting...

Lastly, I just wanted to say that I'm shocked they didn't even slightly mention the ending as Cyrus and Leon did, and how amazing it was. All I'll say is that for the kind of movie this is, it's very hard to see coming, and had me holding back the urge to yell out 'Hell yeah!'. One of the best endings to a horror film I have seen in a long time, and one that, in this day and age, should be a welcome surprise to many. As much as I liked the movie, though, after that ending, the last thing I want is a sequel. If one is made, I will not watch it, and ignore it's existence. It'd be like making a sequel to 'Aliens', much less two.

    Good thing that never happened.

21:20 - As a horror writer, hearing your descriptions and criticisms of this movie keep making me cringe though I had nothing to do with these particular movies.  I can see the potential to where this could be a great story.  But I haven't watched either of these movies yet and I don't want to defend them too much because I might watch them and possibly hate them more than you guys (not saying you hated the movies... you did say you had fun to a certain extent).

Speaking of the writers, they got their start from winning the writing part of Project Greenlight Season 3 (Do you remember that show?  Probably not because not enough people watched it, damn it).

At any rate, I think this is the section when they were chosen (and you also get a bit of their submission video and sketches for Feast):

15:20 - This guy sounds like a mixture of Bruce Wayne and General Zaroff from The Most Dangerous Game.  He has the money because he's rich and he has the time because he's rich.  All you need now is to see the motivation on WHY he's using his time and money to kill people in these elaborate ways.  All in all, it sounds interesting to me.

    I'd give this a 4 out of 5

totally gory and violent to boot
the makers of the 'Saw' movies bring the same sick, twisted edge to a serial killer
like Jigsaw the Collector sets up elaborate traps for his victims having them be unaware where they are and when they strike lies the difference
one victim escapes his evil clutches while a young girl falls victim to his sadistic schemes and scary tortures
the film explores more of the mythology than what was presented in the previous film
there's a ton of amazing gore scenes that'll satisfy many fans, a lot of the carnage is what holds this film together
the Collector himself is one intimidating bad guy who's face you can't see and who's sanity is all over the place
this cast is a bunch of unknowns to me but Emma Fitzpatrick is pretty neat as a victim who gains some courage toppling the killer's dangerous tactics
the ending seems like a setup for another installment, I'm wondering what more they can do with this series

I didn't bother seeing the 1st one since I heard it was so bad

Glad to hear the villian is back and better than before, also that the protaginst in here are as likable as the original's lead. I still have my ticket for the original and liked how that film mixed the traps of jigsaw with the physicality of micheal or jason. For all of those who fall in love with this film welcome to the collection, hope to see you in a few years.

The first one was interesting only wish they didn't go so much into the bloody gore film it seems to becoming. It could be an interesting character study of this collector guy ( who he is, why he does what he does ) or atleast get into his process like Dexter. Dexter is a serial killer and learning more about him and his life is great expecially his background and his upcoming. For The Collector maybe they should have made it into a horror film without so much gore but rather subtle actions like the first one where he was looking for the arkin guy and only seeing each characters reaction while the audience hopes the guy doesn't get caught and saves atleast one person. Maybe just wait for this to come out on dvd. RENtal maybe

The writers of the original Collector indicated that the story was originally created for Jigsaws origin before the Saw series was created.

Didn't you say you liked The Collection co-host, on the Fantastic Fest coverage.

I remember liking the main character from the last movie so maybe I'll find something to like here on DVD. I've always wondered why more movies don't have crack commando teams hunt down masked killers.
