Podcasts - THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 9, Issue 4: Movie Year in Review pt 1

If only you knew how crazy things were around here for the LEOG. And I just mean outside of our usual inebriated revelry. Which is pretty much why we gave most of the team the week off. Except Brian, of course, who's still being hazed (and will continue to be until I decree it no longer so).

But, never fear, content is here, as we bring in the head of the Austin Film Critic's Association and creator of Austin movie blog par excellence, Slackerwood, Jette Kernion, and our old friend from the Remote Viewing Xmas special (and, of course, Film School Rejects), Adam Charles, to start discussing some of the year's best (or at least, most talked about) movies. Check it...

I thought it was a great year for film, but Django Unchained easily came out on top for me. I think it's Tarantino's best film since Jackie Brown, and an improvement over Inglourious Basterds (in terms of narrative and focus). I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Cloud Atlas; I was also surprised by how much I DIDN'T enjoy The Dark Knight Rises :-(

    MY list:

    1) Django UNchained

    2) Zero Dark THirty

    3) Cloud Atlas

    4) Argo

    5) Skyfall

    6) Moonrise Kingdom

    7) LIncoln

    8) Life of Pi

    9) The Avengers

    10) The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Wow! I LOVE this girl! Someone ELSE who actually recognizes that "The Avengers" was NOT all that and that Joss Whedon is no "Genius"! "The Avengers" could have been a total piece of crap (...which, at least to me, it wasn't far from) and directed by TWO Joss Whedon's and fanboys would have ate it up and adored it all the same.

That Looper talk cut me deep... I loooved how Levitt looked in the film, not to mention his acting. One of the top films of the year for me.

Once again, Brain has continually been my own personal voice in the group. I agree with just about every opinion he has stated of this years films.

I think it's pretty funny you guys are giving Kevin Smith shit, because recently I've been listening to some of his podcasts. His movies never watch em, but on his podcasts he seems like a pretty cool and down to earth guy.

Hey can somebody help me find the Leog episode where it was either Grant or Peter who were talking about the Mcrib? I can't pinpoint which episode it was.

Guns should be kept in locked cabinets, re-registered with the local police department and a psychologist should visit the owner the first time during registration and then every 2 years thereafter. The yearly license for fire arms should be $100 per fire arm rising to £200 per fire arm per year for automatic weapons or semi automatic.

I agree with Cyrus, Adam Sandler doesn't count anymore.  His movies are the worst and it's a waste of his talent.

I also can't wait for Antman. He is my favorite Avenger and I can't wait to see him on the big screen.

Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises are the years two biggest let downs. ESPECIALLY TDKR!

I personally feel Rise of the Guardians edged Wreck-it Ralph for the best animated film of the year. They're definitely the top two though, in my opinion. People say Frankinweenie was awesome too, but I wouldn't know since I purposely skipped it. I'm not a Tim Burton fan at all.

Well, December is usually the time I catch up on all the indie films I missed so will definetly check out Safety Not Guaranteed. I love Aubrey Plaza so this should be awesome.

If a film requies you to "get over" something visually unappealing (Looper, Hobbit) the film has failed on a fundamental level.

I've heard an interesting theory that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Sybok. With that in mind if you watch the trailer again (especially the Japanese one) you get the distinct feeling that that's where they're going with it.

The Artist is a forgettable film. It's a trivia question in 2 more years because it doesn't further film, it won't re-usher that era...it's just a technical feat on par with someone wanting to do things like the good ol'days. Don't get me wrong, it's a quality film in terms of form and function but that's about it. You can watch better versions of that set up by going back to that Golden Age, which beat that particular film.

Much like Owen Wilson said in Midnight in Paris...this statement of this nostalgia era...boy, is it behind rose colored glasses and the Artist epitomizes that, let's make an old movie because movies back then...

2012 made bolder statements with film. Interesting enough, a lot of them had this theme of confronting fear that linked a lot of them...

There's been a lot of solid movies this year, but no definitive favorites like last year (Midnight in Paris, Beginners and The Artist are all superior films to any 2012 release thus far).

Not really in any particular order:

    Marvel's The Avengers
    Moonrise Kingdom
    Safety Not Guaranteed
    Beasts of the Southern Wild
    Liberal Arts
    The Grey
    Argo
    The Sessions
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
    Chronicle
