Podcasts - THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 9, Issue 6: The quiet before the storm

Okay, so it's not even vaguely quiet and the gang showed up in droves. So sue me. I thought originally of a down period between Xmas and New Years Eve when this was recorded, but we apparently are just going to party on through. Much is discussed including the Xmas episode of Doctor Who, Amazing Spider-Man #700, and the induction of old and new members into the permanent cast. Check it...

    Dr. Who Frame Story Spoilers:

    Season 1 - Bad Wolf:
The Doctor is about to die from a fleet of Darleks, Companion1 becomes a reality altering god that wipes out the entire Darlek fleet out, makes Jack immortal, and spreads the words "Bad Wolf" throughout all time and space.

Season 2 - Torchwood: The Doctor is about to die in the cybermen and darleks war, The Doctor creates a vacuum to the Void and sucks all the cybermen and most of the darleks back. In the meantime Companion1 gets trapped in a parallel universe never able to return to The Doctor. Torchwood is an anagram of "Doctor Who".

Season 3 - Mr. Saxon: The Doctor is about to die from old age by Master (another timelord), when the Companion2 convinces everyone on earth to concentrate on The Doctor who gets regenerated by their psychic energy. He kills Master (who is Mr. Saxon). Companion2 leaves.

Season 4 - Medusa Cascade: The Doctor is about to die by a reality bomb created by the creator of the Darleks, when Companion3 shows up and absorbs Timelord knowledge which allows her to deactivate the bomb. The Doctor then kills all the Darleks. Companion3 gets her memory erased.

Season 5 - Cracks: The Doctor dies by flying into the exploding TARDIS to create a clone of the universe. By doing he cannot be recreated in the clone universe. Companion4 in the clone universe then magically by thought (not making this up) recreates The Doctor and the TARDIS. The Cracks were formed when by the TARDIS exploding.

Season 6 - Death of The Doctor: The Doctor has to die in a certain place at a certain time otherwise time-space collapses. The Doctor then gets a robotic suit and mimics his death, magically circumventing this permanent fixed point in time of his death (no joke). Probably one of the best seasons with one of the worst endings.

Spiderbat has a point. Greg Rucka said the very same thing, stop collecting bad comics. Problem is, taste is subjective.

We always look at the past with rose colored glasses but fact is, there are some really BAD stretches of comic book writing in every title. Course that was back in the day when I wanted a PERFECT intact collection of my favorite characters.

I find it tough to patronize my younger, fellow comic book collectors who like titles I might pass on at age thirty-eight.

Interestingly, Slott did say there's going to be ONE last plot point (during Word Balloon interview) in Superior Spider-man #1. I quite agree, this is no different than the hell Brubaker took for killing Captain America, Hickman for killing the Torch...and Peter Parker WILL be his old self by the time the second act of the Amazing Spider-man hits theaters.

@Leon I appreciate the joking call-out about me "joining the LEOG" but I think I have to not throw up and actually get on mic once before we start talking about that :P

I kid of course, and you have added some great new members of the LEOG this episode ;)

Spiderman 700 was fine; I want to see where Slot is going to take this before I pass judgement.

I understand the LEOG crew is tired of Marvel always doing events. I also have event fatigue. However you can't put the blame on Marvel for constantly shooting out events. The blame should go to the fans that keep buying those books. In 2012 Avengers vs Xmen was the top book; only in July when Walking Dead #100 was release A vs X took the number two spot. If your Marvel why would you stop events when it's a proven revenue. Marvel would stop doing events if the revenue wasn't there.

As for Slott on Word Balloon, I don't know if I would say he's any more of a prick than any American geek who professes an Anglo-fetish can quote Doctor Who, Downton Abbey and finds a clever way to use "thrice" in a sentence (that is in reference to his interview on newsarama during NYCC).

In my book he is a pompous writer but no more or no less than any writer who gets that spotlight.

I like the Mark Waid induction a lot. Similar situation to Gail Simone, he was fired then re-hired by Marvel for Fantastic Four...so DC is NOT exclusive in the douche bag department. :)

No Atomic Procrastinator. It remains dangling from last page of Spider-men to this day.

I have Jon Spaihts' original script here. http://www.prometheusforum.net/Alien-Engineers.pdf Spaihts confirmed that it's his.

I remember back during the Clone Saga and I was still new to Spidey and I heard all these people saying "This is terrible, I'm dropping Spider-Man forever," and I'd say, "Hey man, it's not that great but it's not worth dropping this character." And then when One More Day occurred and I heard people saying, "This is terrible, I'm dropping Spider-Man forever," I said "Okay, yes it's terrible and insulting, but I don't think you should give up on this character." I say all this because I just wanted to point out that I'm more than aware that as I stand here today and say, "This is terrible and I'm dropping Spider-Man forever," I fully realize what a nut I sound like.

To me reading comics is kind of like being in a relationship (hold on, I can make this metaphor work). You start casually reading a character's stories and then eventually realize that you really like them. Then you stick with them and sure, they go through waves or spots in their life where they're a little different or sometimes not what you remembered them being, but you stand by them because you know that down below all the stuff they're dealing with at the moment the person you fell for is still there. It might be buried deep down but they're still there. However, when I look at how Pete spent the last days of his life being spat on in a dying body, the worst possible prison imaginable, and he dies without a single tear being shed for him because after all the good he did nobody even knows it was him, and Doctor Octopus of all people is going to date Mary Jane while she thinks its Pete and we're expected to go along with it, and to top it all off just thinking about how the people running Marvel actually thinks this is what's good for business, and this is what's good for comics. Take all of that and put it together, and I just look at the Spider-Man series and say, "I don't even know who you are anymore." So I'm sorry, but Spidey and I are broken up, and we are never, ever, ever getting back together.

Remember when comics could be for adults but were still uplifting and fun enough that anyone could read them? I don't think comic companies should dumb their books down for little kids, but I can't imagine if a parent picked this book up for their little kid that it wouldn't just traumatize them. Just think about the fact that Kane, the psychotic murdering clone of Spider-Man now has his own book, and its actually more fun and uplifting and positive than the actual Spider-Man book. Just think about that. And I know a lot of people will say who cares because its only temporary, well that's just the cherry on top for me. The fact that Spider-Man is the flagship character for a company, but death has come to be so unimportant and dismissive that when he dies nobody even cares because that's just how the industry works, honestly just thinking about that makes me want to drop Marvel and DC together.

Sorry about the massive rant, but just had to get that out there. As always this was a great episode.

If you get a chance listen to the world ballon podcast that was posted up today. Its an interview with Dann Slott about amazing spider-man 700. Slott comes off as a HUGE prick, I will not be buying anything that this guy writes anymore.

Jeff Hocker: As both a Whovian and a Dwarf fan, I'd say that they're really very different. Who is not nearly as irreverent as Dwarf, and while it has its comedic moments, I wouldn't classify it as a comedy. The thing they most have in common (at least in the early Who episodes) is their budget.

However, I'd say that Doctor Who will likely appeal to you on its own merits.
