Hearing JK Simmons ask all those questions made me think that they would be great to sample for a soundboard and do prank calls!

Ahh, see this is one flick I'm not with you guys on.  I actually thought this movie did a really good job of avoidingboth stupid white people and stupid dad syndrome.  I found it to be well written, it had a well drawn family of characters, it was well shot, had some cool chills, and some really good performances.  Some of the complaints here just seem a little out of order from how I remember the sequence of events going (especially hinging on when the characters know it's aliens).  I can think of plot-points that pretty much explain away most of the problems expressed.

Also, just as a sidebar - it's unfortunate because they sorta had to, but I wish they didn't give away the alien aspect in the trailer because that would have been cooler as a surprise.

I just think that this movie falls unfortunate victim to circumstance, because most of the problems I can find with it aren't the movie's fault.  Characters in horror movies don't know they're in a horror movie and I thought in this instance their behavior, for the most part, made sense.  I feel like because we've seen Sinister and Insidious very recently, the knowledge of those movies will get in the way of this one for a lot of people.  I just think the movie deserves to be taken on its own merits and in that respect, I was pleasantly surprised and found it to be quite solid.  That's just me though.

Anyhow gents, I enjoyed the review, but this time I disagree.  For me, while it wasn't groundbreaking, I thought it was really solidly done and I'd probably give it an enthusiastic matinee.  But again, that's just me.  Til next time!

I used to watch Dark Skies as a kid. Good show, I don't think theres any relation to this film. Theres another Dark Skies on netflix. It was on NBC, and then later Sci-Fi.

Why can't they make an actual movie about the Sandman? Make him small like that Sandman from the animated movie, only a horror movie....

hearing Co-Host talk about that "alien abduction: incident in lake county" made me think about this movie i saw awhile back

its really intriguing and has you guessing back and froth. i watched it with my roommate and he did not like it the way he liked insidious. yet he did not like sinister as much.

at any rate i recommend folks try this one out as you may like it.

I'm pretty sure they are referring to how white people are usually portrayed in scary movies and not how white people act in real life when it comes to supernatural shit.

@Jim Haha, sorry Jim, I meant to say the trailer on t.v. I notice they tend to give away more clips of the film on tv spots than they do in the theater.

    (about 10 seconds later)

Co-Host: "At first, just looking at the trailer..."

Actually the last midnight movie madness wasn't that long ago. They did it with Texas Chainsaw 3d.

I know you won't agree with me but I was surprisngly creeped out during the second half of this movie. While nothing original and the characters are dumb, I was strangly creeped out later in the film. While there are flaws, I will give it a low matinee.

In my opinion, Scott Stewart is one of those film makers with really good ideas, but no idea of how to present them.

@MDS/JohnnyCache but it always happens with white characters in these types of movies. Hence the term "White people" term.

I made a short Alien Abduction film. I have a huge irrational fear of these fuckers. So I've always wanted to make one.
It had a high budget of 20 dollars. Haha.

    Maybe Co-Host might dig it.

Uh, just a bone of contention:

When a character spends 80% of the movie being convinced of "aliens"/"ghosts"/"murderer" (whatever) then that character then suddenly switches from "being convinced" to "accusing another character".... That's just SHITTY SCRIPT WRITING and not "white people issue".

I don't think it has to do with "white people" so much as entitled people - people who are SURE that THEY can't be put out of their homes, that this stuff isn't really happening to THEM.

Great review guys, these midnight movie madness reviews are some of the best.

You brought up Signs and I have a weird view of that movie because M Night came out and said they weren't aliens, they were demons, and that would explain the water thing since Mel Gibson's character blessed the water when he said grace. However, there isn't a single other thing in that movie that goes to show they're demons, so that's been my big problem with that movie, that M Night expected us to think they're demons simply because of the water thing after an hour and a half of saying "no man, they're aliens."
