Podcasts -  Remote Viewing: Episode 52

Lots of REALLY great stuff reviewed on blu-ray and dvd this week (and one film that may be the worst of 2012...and no, it's not Twilight). Oh, and the chance to win the first season of one of our favorite new tv series. Check it...

As a little Chinese girl with a lack of role models to identify with in age-appropriate children's media, I loved Mulan and the fact that Lea Salonga provides her singing voice. But even then I thought there was something borderline racist about it. Mulan 2 isn't great but for a direct to DVD sequel it's fine. It has the Pocahontas 2 issue of trying to tackle issues in the romance and overall plot that maybe should be left out of a children's movie or executed with a little more grace. Also, the songs aren't as good.

I did not love the first Hunchback of Notre Dame movie when it first came out but I can appreciate the score now. I mean Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken? I think I saw part of the sequel as a child but it was so bad I couldn't get though it.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame sequel is awful, skip it. Saw a tiny bit of the Mulan one. The production looks nice but the premise struck me as condescending, but I can't confirm since I didn't see the whole thing. Something about Mulan having to escort a few princesses to an arranged marriage and telling them to marry for love instead.

Aladdin had 2 sequels, the third movie was the finale to the tv series. Production is terrible in the 3rd one, but I liked the story, get to see Aladdin's dad and it had a pretty good ending. I like how the sequels progress the story and do something new instead of retreading what happened in the original movie.

Yeah, right there with you - I'd rather watch an honest behind the scenes featurette like The Incredibles making of, where you see people have heated disagreements over creative decisions and work their asses off, rather than watching the filmmakers riding scooters through corridors while licking lollipops going "Hey! Wanna see how animations are made?!"

I haven't seen either film but your description of Ed Gein in Hitchcock reminds me of the hallucination in The Iron Lady. So is this a thing now?

    why did this keep skipping!

Any movie with Michael Wincott in worth watching to me. Yep, I have to see Hitchcock now.

I wasn't that thrilled with The Lady Vanishes or Dial M For Murder. I wouldn't say I had major problems with the direction. It was more that I wasn't invested in the story or the characters. But because you love Hitchcock so much and I trust the two of you, I'm hoping I just need to find the right film.

"Hunchback II" is horrible, horrible peace of animation that should never existed...

"Mulan II" is actually pretty fun, it's just feels more like "Mulan the pilot for animated series" rather then "Mulan - The sequel". The songs are supprisingly good...

    THE BLOB

the late 70s-all of the 80s was truly the Era of the remake.Invasion of the body snatchers (78), The Thing (81), The Fly (86), The Blob (88) are not only some of the best remakes of all time, along with being completly superior to the originals (Body snatchers.... is arguable how far superior it is, sense as the original is truly OMG great), they are some of the greatest horror movies of all time. im am not at all a person who is all Every modern movie sucks and hollywood does nothing but remake old crap, blah blah type of person, but by god its sad how lesser modern horror remakes are compared to these 4 (and i like a good amount of them (the ring, the hitcher, F13)

    NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

my ratings for the franchise ---

    1. NES (84) --- 4 of 5
    2. NES 2 FR --- low 3 of 5 (i think its alot better than people make it out to be, i really like the supporting female in the film played by kim myers, i liked her even more than heather lampkin in the first film)
    3. NES 3 DW --- 5 of 5 (best of series)
    4. NES 4 DM --- 2 of 5 (blah film, but badass finale with freddy being ripped apart from the inside)
    5. NES 5 DC --- 0 of 5 (worst of series)
    6. Freddys dead --- low 3 of 5 (surprisingly enjoyable finale for the original series much better than 4 and 5)
    7. New nightmare --- 4 of 5
    8. Freddy vs jason ---- 3-4 of 5
    9. Remake --- 2 of 5 (meh film, but good preformences by haley and mara)

Oh no no, Brian. Hunchback 2 and Mulan 2 are excellent. The Empire Strikes Back for those series. You should totally double-feature them...

@Brian 'Born a Bastard' Jordan. The book sin't about whether God exists or not, it seeks to explain why some people believe in God and others don't. Whatever story is true is literally up to the watcher/listener, and if you believe the first story then you believe in God because you can make that leap of faith. The other story is harsh and cold and explains everything fine enough too and you can believe in that if you can't make that leap of faith. Honestly it's open ended because the question of whether there is a God is open ended it can't be proved either way and a film is just trying to show the difference between those who believe and those who don't without condemning either party. This is probably why Cyrus liked it since he's Agnostic and his mind is open to that kind of stuff. Also he's stated on a LEOG that one of his ideas is that all religions are just trying to answer some truth about the universe/existence/afterlife/God etc. and we just can't know it at this stage. Of course Leon just replied cyncially that religion also might just exist because people are afraid of death which made Cyrus almost go 'yeah if you're a cynical asshole lol'. But anyhow that would explain why I think he'd like it I guess based on his views either way on religion...you know beyond it just being a great film either way.
