I would probably choose "Fish Story" as the last movie I would before the end of the world.

Yeah well they're probably just trying to look diverse, or better, atleast represent some none english speaking titles.  I live in Switzerland and I remember that film having been in theaters for more than a month.  I was actually happy to hear you say that this and that cat movie where nominated. Atleast they were presenting these foreign films for "best animated picture" without them having to be american (or english films). Such as in the other categories where generally only english speaking films (actors) are nominated.  Most of the time, there is only one chance for a foreign film to win an oscar and that is in the "best foreign film" or "best film"category.

Anyways much love to you all, my joy to hear of those films being nominated was stunted by your surprise.

There's a pretty sizable difference between talking shit, and where the frak did this movie come from? Not screened (for any critics I know), it's nth hour appearance in the nominations (along with the cat movie) took, I think, most folks by surprise.

Just had to say that i was surprised to hear you guys talking shit ( ;) specially you Cyrus) about the films nominated for best animation feature.   Just FYI, Chico and Rita, is a sexually driven film and about a Cuban couples life, and obviously the female lead is hot latina. Anyways, you'd probably be interested once you've seen a few a pictures.

P.S. "Tree of Life" did suck balls, plus it tricked me.  It made me think that dinosaur side story was going to last all throughout. f-ing movie.  Probably would have been interesting if it did.

Assuming you guys haven't already come up with something else already, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on music. Not to say movie scores and soundtracks which I have a hunch you've already done, but I mean your musical tastes, albums you've listened to lately, new music or musicians or bands you may be hip to. All of this considering you even have time to listen to any new music outside of watching every movie on the planet.

Whatever the topic, looking forward to the next episode. Peace.

Nate, you seriously missed talking about Image comics! Image turns 20 this year! There are so many great Image titles coming out. Fatale was the only one mentioned. There's also Supreme by Alan Moore being continued by Erik Larsen. The new Haunt creative team is doing great things. The new Glory ongoing is awesome. Invincible is doing amazing things right now. Walking Dead is near #100. Darkness is getting a great new writer after #100 (and the current writer is great too). Witchblade has a really good creative team. Artifacts is going to be ongoing and it looks great. Savage Dragon continues to be awesome. Prophet is a great new series. Luther Strode wraps up. Elephantmen is a fantastic comic. Saga by Brian K. Vaughan for crying out loud! Image is kicking ass in 2012 and it demands your attention, people!

@The LEOG crew  lol I'm sorry I'm late but, I'm back.  lol If you don't want me flooding the comments then why mention my name on the podcast ?

Regarding changing one's mind on entertainment/art, there is a big difference between TV and movies. With TV, the show has time to evolve and change as the show goes on. With movies, they never change (unless it's a George Lucas movie lol ). On average movies have 2 hours or less to tell a story and that's it. Were as a TV show may have several seasons to get better or worse.

The reason changing one's opinion on movies is such a foreign concept to me is because I rarely do. For example, many of the movies I loved as a kid I still love today such as the original Star Wars trilogy or the Indiana Jones trilogy. Another example would be The Dark Knight. If I live to be a million years old I will still love that movie.

As far as movies that you are looking forward to seeing in 2012 there are many that I have in common with you guys. I really want to see Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, The Secret World of Arrietty, John Carter, Chronicle, and possibly Men in Black 3 and Prometheus. I'm not so much looking forward to Ghost Rider 2 or The Hunger Games. The pissing fire scene in the trailer for Ghost Rider really turned me off. The Hunger Games looked like a watered down, PG, version of something like Running Man or Death Race.

I agree that The Last Unicorn is a great movie. Good movie to end the world with.

Lastly , I agree with Cyrus that Todd McFarlane is a great artist and that he is a better artist than he is a writer.

@ Gothka13 - Harry Potter was not snubbed. It got what it deserved, and didn't get what it didn't. There is nothing incredible, beyond a blockbuster sense, in those films. Take the acting from the leads as a perfect example. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe bounce from terrible to tolerable and go straight back again constantly. The scripts were workmanlike, and ultimately amounted to just translations from page to screen.

@Cyrus - It's pronounced Keyrawn. I assume you were trying to say Ciarán Hinds, though perhaps I'm wrong, it sort of flew past. Great show as always lads.

I surprised you guys didn't talk about Harry Potter when you were talking about Oscars.....I mean, this may just be the geek in me, but there was a huge community online that was so disappointed that Hollywood wouldn't even try to nominate it for a worthy award (and I'm not talking about best picture which I know would never win). I mean it might not have started as a movie, but it has made a huge impression on the movie industry and it is the last time they had a chance to give it an award.

Hell, even the Co-Host 3000 did somewhat enjoyed himself during the movie and he was not really a fan. I know Harry Potter probably already has enough publicity as it is, and that's why the academy would think it needs to recognized smaller films, but you know sometimes when big films are good, they deserved an award. And not just for fucking 'art direction'.

And sometimes small films are bad movies. I just saw the Iron Lady, and boy, talk about your editing problems. I was able to keep up with the plot, despite some weird cut scenes, but this movie is like Inception, if you're not paying attention, you will be confused as fuck.

    @George Napper

Only 9 nominees because they changed the rules. You have to have at least 5% #1 votes to cross the threshold.

    Great show as usual!

    Alcatraz is weird for me.

Great: Flashbacks and the mystery aspect of the phenomenon. Good acting from the prisoners ie bad guys. Good setup: each episode involving a different alcatraz "escapee".

Bad: the 2 main protagonists are horrible actors. The blond is hot and all but she can't act and the fat guy is just annoying to me.

This is why there are so many OBVIOUS snubs this year:

The way the Oscars work is, Academy members are not critics. They are not required to see everything. They are sent a list of every film that's eligible and then see what they want or have time to see. My theory is that this year had SO MANY good movies that most voters tried to save time by just seeing the stuff that had the biggest names behind it, had the most buzz behind it, or were the most easily seen by them. As a result, not all films that were great from this year are represented like they should be (and neither are great songs... I have nothing to explain that) and films like Take Shelter, Submarine and We Need to Talk About Kevin are not represented whatsoever. And that's also how we end up with nine nominees. Two movies probably tied for tenth place and they didn't want to nominate eleven films.

It's really quite sad. I think something about this system has to change.

(And yes, the ONLY reason Meryl Streep is getting ANY attention at all for The Iron Lady is because it's a Weinstein production. Michelle Williams has that award all wrapped up, though. And yes, that's a Weinstein production, too, but a MUCH better one.)

Cant wait for Mad Men season 5, but I can never recommend it to anyone because

    Season 1 = Boring

Season 2 = Slightly more interesting, but still very boring..

Season 3 = still boring but picks up at the end

    Season 4 = Brilliant!!

I'm so glad to see Looper being mentioned; it's the second on my list of most anticipated films of 2012, behind The Dark Knight Rises. I am definitely seeing it Friday of release.

I like the extended number of Oscar nominations for Best Picture, because when you look in 2004, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind wasn't nominated for Best Picture, which is a complete disgrace.
